I can't imagine its legal. But I had 2 100W lights under my rear bumper, wired to a switch by my right leg. It worked awesome for when people get on your a$$ and flash the high beams.

Not illegal to HAVE, but most likely would be illegal to use

Good point, say if they get blinded then go into a ditch because of your asshat move. I say just slow down and let them pass then return the favour.

Very illegal and would be very bad if it happened to be a cop who got onto your tail for a little bit.

I dont see why it would be illegal. People have lights on thier bumpers, just say that they are back up lights if someone were to say something to you about it.

It would be just as illegal as tailgating and flashing your high beams at someone. Just use them wisely and you probably could get pulled over for them if a cop saw you.

the person who is ridin your tail is going to get the ticket. and even if it was a cop, its like being out on a country road at night and having one forget to flip off his brights.... there gonna dim down to. it falls under common courtesy

Isn't there an urban myth about flashing your high beams at somebody? You may be opening a whole can of beans here.

Chances are the guy on your rear with his brights on you is a cop. They always ride my bumper for a couple of miles before they finally pull me over, or sometimes don't.

Not the same. It's the intention and the circumstances that cause the problem. Intentionally flashing bright lights in the face of another driver is distracting and can potentially cause an accident. THAT is illegal no matter how you look at it. It's also about as stupid a thing to do as the action of the tailgater. Best advice was already posted, just slow down until they go around you.

best post in the entire thread so far... the lights themselves SHOULDN'T be illegal (check federal, state and municipal laws, as there may be somethign in any of those jurisdictions) it's all about how you use them...

take a look at the "what did you do to your ranger today" thread, someone posted pics of his lights exactly like you are talking about, i think he posted it today, it's on the last page

second best post... this is how i would deal with it...

just remember, if you slam on your brakes to be a dick, you can get cited (and possibly arrested) for dangerous driving, aggressive driving, failure to remain in control of your vehicle, public endangerment ect. but, if "something" ran, or flew infront of you, you were avoiding a possible collision, and the other driver is guilty of following too closely

what you might have seen could be a plastic bag, or a squirrel, or a piece of newspaper, or a shadow, or glare off someone's mirror... but you saw it and reacted before you realized what it was, right?

yeah like weezl said theyre not illegal to have unless your state has requirements for aux lights to have covers. my one buddy has rear facing hellas for when it launches and loads his boat. but PA makes him have covers on it at all times. plus most dump trucks have rear facing spots as their back up lights so not illegal in ohio

here the laws for forward facing lights are that you can install no more than 4 extra, they must be used in conjunction with the stock headlights, they do not require covers at any time, you cannot use more than 2 of the 4 lights, at any 1 time, and must not be used on public roads (i am about 90% sure of this one) also, they must be mounted no farther to the exterior of the vehicle than the stock headlights, and no higher than the center of the stock headlights, and no lower than 4 inches from the ground

don't know about rearfacing...

that being said, i have 2 on my truck, i use them most days on the way to work as i work down some back roads that have construction on, and no street lights... i have also seen MANY vehicles with roof top light bars, many vehicles with more than 4 lights, and a good number who use them on the road (responsibily of course) and never seen any of them pulled over... i was told by the police officer who told me the above laws, that they are not enforced ever, and that he had never heard of an officer writing a ticket for any of them, except for using them on the road (if someone is driving down the hiway through the city with everything on)

I wouldn't turn them on and leave them on. I might flash them a few times quickly so the driver gets the picture that their brights are on, or that they are too close. I've had semi's flash me with their work lights when I left my off-roads on when getting on the freeway. I also had a Sheriff flash me when I was loaded down in the back. I flashed him back of course, but didn't know who it was untill he passed me. Didn't get pulled over.

On a side note to the sudden slow down... I did that the other day to a guy in a Jetta. He was so close I couldn't even see his face in my rear view. Just the top of the roof and roof-rack. But I was slowing down because of traffic in front of me. He slammed on the brakes, barely missed my truck, over corrected and slid across the freeway over 4 lanes backwards into the jersey barrier. I stopped and watched out my window. He climbed out, picked up his ripped off bumper cover. Then sped off in the fast lane once again tailgating another truck. Some people will NEVER learn. So its best just to ignore them.

honstly, this is when you need to call 911, tell them that he was tailgating you, lost control, crashed his car and "took off running" in his car again, and looked like he was going to take more people out with him, and that based on his driving, you believe him to be extremely drunk, tell them the plate number also... it is actually illegal to NOT call the police for people like that up here

I don't know why anybody would intentionally brake-check and invite a collision. Reason I now have a Ranger is because my car got rear ended and it took 3 months (exactly to till today) to finally get a check from the liable party. Not something I'd invite on myself.

Did that before when I was driven off the road and into an embankment by a woman on meth or something like that. I was told that I should only report real emergencies and was put on hold for 20 mins untill I hung up. Now I just watch it happen and hope I don't get stuck in the middle and have to beat some idiot/junky to a pulp before the cops arrive.

not sure where you live, but up here, if someone said that, heads would roll... i'm not kidding... i would phone the city police internal investigations line, make a complaint to them, that they are not investigating dangers to the public, i would call your country sherriff and/or state patrol, complaining that you support law enforcement, but do not feel that the spesific force is doing all they can to protect the public, i would then phone the government, i don't know what your people are called (i assume you are in the states) up here, there is a line for the ombudsman, who is a member of the provincial (state) government who investigates law enforcement complaints, i would also call my MLA (member of legislative assembly) basically a person who reports directly to the premier (who i think is equivlent to your govenors) and is there spesifically to take complaints from the public and fix them! they are paid to listen to your complaints regardless of how frivolous it is. just remind them that you are a tax payer, and a good citizen and do not feel safe (do NOT tell them you pay their salary, as this will get you kicked out of their office with no further action)

honestly, i am a huge supporter of police, that is complete B.S. if need be, you can also write a letter to the cheif of that police force

most people don't realize that usually the person who takes the 911 call, is a civilian, has absolutely no authority. they think they are more important than they are and they need a kick in the ***...

The police works a bit differently down here. For one, there is NO complaint form to fill out. Nor is there anyone to complain to. If you do want to make a complaint its a very long drawn out process where first you are accused of breaking the law, interrogated, and then finally after believing yourself that you have wronged can you complain.

Ok so its not actually that bad, but the police around here DO NOT take complaints. That's not even an option.

I don't think they like the call in idea, simply because any idiot out there with a cell phone will start calling in every other idiot on the road. Take a trip down here to the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington and you'll get an idea. There are ALOT, and I mean, a ****TON of bad drivers here.

The cops here have to see it to believe it. That's about what I gathered. Now if I had a dash cam, yeah I would've called. Its hard to fake a video. But in all reality, what are they going to do? Nothing. They might tag the plate for suspicious driving, but again, the cop has to see it happen to do anything.

**** am i glad to be canadian... up here, any police officer can issue charges (criminal offence, provincial statute or municipal bylaw) which upon a conviction, could range in anything from community service, public appology, fine or jail time, on any person's word

here's the catch, it's gotta be worth while (of course) and the person who's word is being taken, has to appear in court as a witness
