swapping from a 4.0 to a smoker!!!

hello ladies and gents,
I think it has been done before but i would like to know my options.

my idea is to take out my 4.0 and swap it with a diesel engine
so i wan wondering what engines would fit
it doesn't really matter what make at this point i just want to see what my options are and if its really worth it

Thanks
-Andy

Keep searching man. Anything will fit with enough modification. Look into a Cummins 4bt, then your going to have to look into a completely new drive train.

Your going to have to worry about wiring, engine mounts, tranny, transfer case, driveshafts, gearing, clearances....it goes on and on and on.
Nothing is going to fit right out of the box
And if its really worth it? Its all up to you.

You need $$$$ and skills. People have put a 6bt and a 4bt in a Ranger. There is also a guy finishing up his Ford 6.0 swap in a Ranger. Search.

I'd go with a 4 cyl for sure. There are a lot of them to use, but the 4bt is most popular because you can find the most parts. When my 4.0 dies, 4bt it is.

I've seen/heard of a 7.3psd, a 6.0 psd, several 4bts and a few 6bts in rangers..

I wanted a diesel for a while but they simply don't wrap up as fast as gas motors, and when you punch the pedal in a lot of the situations i get myself into.... you want the motor to react as quick as it can.

What do you mean when you say wrap up as fast? Diesels make twice the amount of torque of a gasser and they do it all below 3 grand. An average gasser would be above that to stay in the power band.

If you are talking about throttle response, then idk. That probably depends a lot on the truck that you are driving. I have driven a Duramax that you hit the go pedal and it goes now.

wrap up.. higher rpms..

a v8 and properly geared axles/tcase with a granny low transmission is more than enough low end torque.. sometimes you just need to hit it and get some tire speed to get up ledges.

Check into some Izuzu engines and Yanmar. They wont make the power of a tuned up 4bt, but they are much much cheaper, lighter, and easier to find and source parts.

I knew a guy who had a 92 F150 with an Izuzu 3.0l 4 cyl diesel from a NPR cab truck. He would average 37 mpg and it would keep even with a 5.0 F150. Oh, and his electrical system for the engine consisted of ONE... yes ONE wire to turn off the fuel when you turned the key off.

Smoke just means you need a bigger turbo.

Personally, I've always thought the CRD Engine that Jeep offered for it's Liberty from 05 to 07 (or 08) would be a great engine for Rangers.

My dad has an 05 Liberty CRD. I recently got to drive it for a 300 mile round trip pulling a 3500 lb Fishing Boat. It pulled it like a champion and I got a 25 MPG. It's rated at right around 300 ft/lbs of Torque (only 140ish HP). But it's definitely a nice little diesel.

Jeep to offer diesel engine retrofit kit using 2.8 CRD four cylinder? — Autoblog Green

But I don't think it's offered in a crate format yet. So unless you can find a Junkyard special, probably wouldn't work.

With those they usually are all mechanical engines. Basically they are mini 5.9l cummins engines. So the same basic "free" mods will work to up power and yes, make it smoke. Izuzu and Yanmar engines are in ALOT of tractors and construction equipment. And you can buy brand new crate engines from the companies direct for the price of a 4bt equipped box van parts vehicle.

Definatley go with a 4 BT Cummins. Lots of upgrades, and I've heard of ones close to 500 horsepower. And there really wouldnt be THAT much wiring. They are mechanical motors, so no EFI wires, computer, or any of that stuff. Just do some reshearch.
