I have a 2000 ford ranger that is leaking from the oil filter but the thing is that if i drive it everyday during the week it doesnt leak but if i dont drive it on saturday it will have a small puddle sunday morning i have changed filters and took it to a mechanic but it still is doing it.

 

pull the filter off again and make sure the o-ring from the old filter isnt stuck to the motor when installing the new filter add a bead of oill the the o-ring on the filter and make sure you dont over tighten it screw it on till it touches then give it 3/4 of a turn

also what brand filter are you using double check you have the right filter

 

Is it like just a run of oil down the filter? Mine has always done that but never accumulated to any amount on the ground..just a small leak on the filter. I have never been able to figure out exactly what the problem is. I have tried many different filters as well.

 

i would suggest finding the actual source of the leak, it is on the filter, but it may not be FROM the filter... might be a valve cover gasget dripping down, or oil sending unit (not sure if our trucks have them, but the ford ones from previous years were prone to leaking... a good pressure washing, and some UV dye might be a good idea too... (leak tester...)

 

I would check for a double gasket at the filter although I doubt it cause even tightened down like an SOB it would probably leak all the time. I agree it could be from a leaky valve cover or oil pan gasket.

 

If you used a wrench to tighten filter you may have cracked it because you made it to tight.I have done this myself,so now all i do is tighten by hand.
I would redo your oil change with a new filter.

 

that is a good point, you may have cracked the filter receiver 9what ever it is actually called) because i believe it is cast aluminum, cast iron at the best... neither of which is really strong...

if that is cracked, it could cause exactly what you described... and a new filter wouldn't change that...

 

I think he was saying that the filter case itself got cracked. but if a filter was cracked or loose it should be spraying oil everywhere especially when running because thats a high pressure part of the system, its right after the oil pump. A valve cover or some other gasket leak is a more likely suspects because the oil only flows around potential leak areas with little to no pressure.
