i'm intrigued.....

i've thought about painting my truck flat black for the longest time
and eventually it will be a sure thing....

the body is decent
it used to be a work truck so it has dents and scrapes, the old guy who owned it had a seizure and drove it into a ditch so the front fenders are a little crumpled and i've HATED the color since i bought it

come spring time, looks like i'm spray painting

old school hot ride primer look....maybe some red pin striping

so all I have to donis sand, wet sand down through the clear coat of paint? No need to primer cause it's just black. Right?

Sand it pretty good. You can't really over sand. And no you don't need a primer.

You could throw down an adhesive promotor and that would help the paint stick.

You said that it would help the paint stick better... Is it the same as the bed liner?

Whenever painting ANYTHING, there is always sanding and prep work involved if you want the paint to stick.

Think of the surface you want to paint like the road, and the paint as the tire. If the tire has nothing to grip, you don't have traction. The tire is supposed to stick to the road. So, creating a prepped rough surface for the paint to grab is key in making it stick.

I bet the Audi weighs a freakin ton. Other than the wheels, I kinda like it for some weird reason.

Yes, that his the car his rolled into his garage on dollies. It's his DD beater, he doesn't care and wanted a cheap paintjob. He's a cool guy, I've talked to him many times about a few different things. The thread linked, is the shorter thread. There is a bigger better one with more replies about the bedliner paint.

Yes, they are real racing harts.

They are the different grains/texture. The lower the number the rougher it is. The higher the number the smoother.

Lower grit paper scuffs the surface for paint. Higher grit buffs the surface for shine and finish.

so when i want to apply the bed liner to the lower half of the body, i would want to use the higher sand paper, and then apply the bed liner/ spraypaint?

and not mess with the higher grit paper?

Correct. Use the low grit to sand off the clear coat.

It is a lot of work so don't think you can do it in an hour. It will take a while.

Anyway, what I would do. Start with a low grit and sand everything. Then move to a higher one and sand the whole thing again. Then move to a higher one and do the whole thing again. That will get the surface the smoothest and make it the nicest.

Use like 80 to 120 grit to start sanding. 220 for medium stuff, then 1000-2000 for wetsanding and finishing work.

Won't really need finishing. I would use the 80 to 120 then 220, then something around a 500 and that would be perfect to spray on the liner with.

But if it was something else then yes finish with 1000-2000.

That was more a guideline for painting in general.

I think he is bette roff just spraying the truck flat black. If he doesnt plan for the bedliner to be permanent, that is going to be one hell of a job to rip if all off when he does want to paint it.

Quick Reply: Paint job, with bed liner.
