i'm intrigued.....
i've thought about painting my truck flat black for the longest time
and eventually it will be a sure thing....
the body is decent
it used to be a work truck so it has dents and scrapes, the old guy who owned it had a seizure and drove it into a ditch so the front fenders are a little crumpled and i've HATED the color since i bought it
come spring time, looks like i'm spray painting
old school hot ride primer look....maybe some red pin striping

You could throw down an adhesive promotor and that would help the paint stick.

Whenever painting ANYTHING, there is always sanding and prep work involved if you want the paint to stick.
Think of the surface you want to paint like the road, and the paint as the tire. If the tire has nothing to grip, you don't have traction. The tire is supposed to stick to the road. So, creating a prepped rough surface for the paint to grab is key in making it stick.

here you go i have a few pics for you... prep for sure i used a palm sander i had one so what the hell... i bed lined the rocker and what not... i used 150 grit cause i did not care and it is holding up very well... and i half murdered my truck i used 250 grit on the paint... cleaned it all as best it could then cleaned it with some mild paint thinner... i beat the **** outa my truck i raked trees when wheeling cause i was bored and i ony got one noticable scratch in the murder...
hope that helps i loved the way it looked from head on or looking at it from an angle but fromt the side it looked like a blob and pissed me off... so i repainted it and had to tape off the hurc so made it hard... but here is the only pic i have it is primer gray with the hurc still back it had held up great and it has been about 3 weeks now... but here you go...
a pic in my garage it took me all day prepping cleaning and tapeing off takes forever so stock up on beer or have a car to get around i used home depot paint... i also cleared the gray to make it last a bit longer...
and no i will not do it again to my truck next time my truck get prepped it is for hurc and that is it i almost considered it this last time but still need it for work and what not... hope that helps...

Correct. Use the low grit to sand off the clear coat.
It is a lot of work so don't think you can do it in an hour. It will take a while.
Anyway, what I would do. Start with a low grit and sand everything. Then move to a higher one and sand the whole thing again. Then move to a higher one and do the whole thing again. That will get the surface the smoothest and make it the nicest.

I think he is bette roff just spraying the truck flat black. If he doesnt plan for the bedliner to be permanent, that is going to be one hell of a job to rip if all off when he does want to paint it.
