Turbo 3.0??possible?
hey whats up everyone im new on here but ive browsed this forum before..i have a 1995 ranger regular cab short bed with a 5speed..pretty much stock except the crazy paint..ill have to get pics up later... i also have a 2003 mustang mach 1 with fullbolt ons and other stuff...i had a crazy idea the other day and it seems pretty simple but i wanted to see if anyone has done or knows anyone thats done this...i wanna turbo my 3.0...the set uo seems simple..reverse the exhaust manifolds and turn them upside down to face forwar then fab up some exhaust tubes into a turbo flange.. i have a garret 42mm ball bearing turbo a stock intercooler off a subaru and a blow of valve... ill have the turbo set up right where the stock MAF sensor is and have an intake tube runnin into the fender and then 3 inch exhaust back to the rear tire and kick out the side liek it is now....i figure if i only run no more than like 6 lbs of boost i can just bump the fuel pressure up and retard the timing a few degrees..i also have to get a boost controller and air/fuel gauge and a boost gauge and that should be it...it sounds like alot but it can be done pretty cheap...any input on this would be great!!!

People were blowing head gaskets with the Whipple supercharger and that kit is only making 5 psi. Also the 5 speeds are weak in these truck thanks to Mazda.

what about putting a turbo on an '05 3.0? 4 speed auto
|
Stock heads and intake will be a power robber, nothing aftermarket and some machine shops won't touch them. If I were you I'd swap a 4.0 SOHC, or even OHC, more aftermarket support, however a turbo 3.0 sounds cool.
Look into a 2.3T swap if you're interested in cheap boost. |
4.0 SOHC is a sick motor i have one in my 03 explorer.. ***** goes like a bat out of hell

If I was going to turbo my truck I would just get an universal kit from STS and build a rear mount setup. Much easier to build and they work just fine. |
If i was to drop in a 4.0L and make it turbo the turbo's would go UNDER the truck lol

just do it, if you blow it up then rebuild it with something better.

hahahah i like how you think!!! I really dont have the money for a motor swap and i can get trannys for free so im not worried about that...i just wanted to it casue i basicaly already have all the big stuff..turbo, intercooler, bov, ect....i just think it would be cool to see a stock looking ranger with rubber floor mats and stock steel rims with lug nut covers and ghost flames spooling up and possibly hangin with stock mustangs and other things..plus anything turbo is just cool anyway :biggthump |
its possible but time consuming, it will take a lot of custom metal work and tuning on a dyno... as far as I know you can run up to 8psi on the stock internals... there is a lot of good info over on RangerPowerSports.com... but just remember that a turbo is like a carb, it likes to adjust itself over time so you would have to keep an eye out on that... and Ive heard terror stories about BOV's being stuck open or closed... but best of luck to you and be sure to post up pics when you get her all done up
