Will a 2003 fx4 rear fit on a 99 xlt 4x2?

I have a 99 xlt with a 3.0 that I’m doing a suspension lift and putting 33’s on it stock gears are 3.73 and I had a friend suggest put a fx4 rear on it and get a locker, 4.10 gears, and disc brakes all in one. My question is will it fit and does anyone have any experience doing this?

Guessing here, but the Ranger only changed in length not width, except for maybe the Gen I to II.

To be sure, measure the distance apart the spring perches are on your truck and then do the same to the FX4, then decide.

Also, you might find in the info about the rear ends on line, compare.

Take a look at the Explorer Rear Axle, usually they are 8.8, Posi, 31 spline, and some have disc brakes.
BUT they are a little wider, and the spring perches need to be relocated to the top of the axle so the perch location isn't the big problem.

The 2003 FX4 LVL II 8.8" with Torsen that I put in my 1987 V8 swap truck was 1" wider per side than the factory 1987 7.5" rear axle. It bolted right on to my factory leaf springs on the 87, but I did have to buy larger u-bolts and springs plates for the thicker axle tubes.

I'd listen to the previous poster and just find an Explorer axle, cut off the spring perches, center up the axle on the springs, and weld new perches on the tubes. They're MUCH cheaper axles to obtain.

The question you have to ask yourself is: Do you do enough offroading to even justify swapping out the rear axle?

Ranger axles with disc brakes only came on 2010 and 2011 Ranger models

Ranger axles from 1983 to 2011 have same spring perch width, 38-1/2 inches , so are swappable
1983 to 1992 have over all width of 56.5", 1993 to 2009 are 58.5"
Mazda B-series 1994 to 2010 used the same axles as Rangers of the same years, no disc brakes

FX4 used same 8.8" axles as any model ranger but had 4.10 ratio, unless buyer wanted a different option, this were all Limited Slip, Fords Trac Loc, differentials
Exception was 2002 FX4 it had 31-spline Torsen rear axle, 4.10, but just for this one year
2003 and up FX4 Level II model also had 31-spline Torsen rear axle, 4.10

So yes a 2003 FX4 rear axle will bolt up to a 1999 Ranger
2003 FX4 will be 8.8" but won't have disc brakes but should be 4.10 ratio, tag on axle should have 4 L10, for limited slip and 410 ratio

Not sure why you would spend money on a Limited slip differential and then add a locker?
If you will add a locker get a cheaper OPEN differential
And read up on Lockers, they are SPECIFIC use devices, not as good as limited slip in most situations, but better than limited slip in some specific situations
