Thanks guys. I'm ready to find out if it sounds as good as it looks. It better after what I paid for it haha

Yeah. I'll get a close up of them tomorrow. They look great. I can't weld worth a damn myself, but I know what it's supposed to look like lol

Haha I figured you would probably be the closest one to Vegas that would actually read that or even care, but it was worth a shot lol. I've never been that far west. I travel east a lot though. Flying in 2/23 and heading out 2/26.

Nice! You can do some pretty sweet looking welds with a tig but they are a little on the expensive side.

Yeah. Right now I'm trying to find a house with a shop or at least enough land for a big shop for me and the fiancé. Then I'm buying a welder and learning how to use it.

Yeah. I'm looking to get a miller 211 pretty soon and then eventually a tig. But then again I still live with my parents when I'm not at school so I have some extra $$ laying around

Thanks.

I think I'd rather drink some Plastidip and spray the rest up my dick hole, but if you're seriously going to be around let me know.

ROFL.

Nah, I won't be around. I've been thinking about going in March, though.

I didn't figure you would be. Late February is close enough to March. If Ryan came he could drink free beer. The trip isn't on my dime.

Yes sir. I'll have to buy it up front, but I'll get reimbursed when I get home. My last company gave me a credit card to use when I traveled. We used to run up some crazy bar tabs lol

So I'm running into clearace issues with the headers and steering shaft extension. I went to the shop tonight, and the motor was shimmed about 2.75" which really worries me. There is going to be way too much torque output for it to be shimmed like that in my opinion.

The only thing I can think of to get the engine lower is to use shorter nuts and bolts and shim down until we have just enough clearance, but we may only be able to get 1-1.25" out of that. 1.5" of shim is still pushing the limit of how much I am comfortable with.

Is there anything else we might be able to do to get the engine lower and clear the steering extension? Here's some pics to show where it is now. There's about 1.25" between the end of the bolt and the headers right now.

From underneath the truck. You can also see the stupid tall shim

I been reading the posts to your thread but not saying much, just keeping up.

Just wondering, why are the TM Headers causing you trouble, I thought they were made for a 5.0/347CI in a Ranger. I would have thought they were bolt in.

What is different with your truck vs any other Ranger/5.0 install ?

They should be bolt in, and for the most part they are. I knew going into this (from reading old threads) that I'd probably have interference issues with the steering shaft extension from my body lift. Every other 5.0 swap I'd seen on body lifted trucks had clearance issues with the bolts on the extension.

In those cases, it was usually just a matter of moving both washers to one side of the extension and using a shorter lock nut. As you can see in the pics, it's going to take more than something that simple. I have yet to see another similar issue (at least a documented one anyway).

I really have no clue why my situation is so different, unless maybe there's some issue with my motor mounts, headers, or shaft extension that I haven't seen. I've never had steering issues since the BL, so I'm ruling the extension out, and I haven't seen anything to make me believe the motor mounts are bad.

No way I would run that spacer. There has to be something else going on. Like you said, motor mounts, or something. How is something like that going to affect the rest of the drivetrain?

Lol I'm okay with using a spacer, but those are way too tall. Right now, I just want to find ways to be able to make them shorter. There's obviously still a bolt running through there, but all of that exposed area makes them weak. I'd prefer to not have to make new motor mounts.

It means the transmission has to be shimmed up, which also creates a need for the driveshaft to be longer. Coincidentally, the driveshaft is about 2 inches too short right now. Solving the motor issue could save me $500 or so for a new shaft. Since I'll be out of town next week, I have a buddy on standby that will go get me a shaft made while I'm gone if we can't solve this problem.

So close on the driveshaft, but yet so far away...

Replace the bolt in the steering extension with a set screw and locktite? Might give u more clearance. If it's through bolted you will have to thread it first but doable

Ok the body lift will change things some but you need to remove any spacers on the engine mounts, go stock Explorer V8 mounts and rework the header to fit or get another type of headers that fit.

Your picks from the underside show one tall spacer for one side of the motor mount, are you using two bolts for the mounts on each side ? If you aren't STOP ! Think this over.

Think about the torque the engine will make and the rotational torque when taking off or pushing the engine, with spacers on the motor mount you increase the shearing force of the rotational torque and longer bolts on the mounts will shear easier, how much or when I do not know for sure but... but... !

Also, the drive shaft, hopefully will fit better without the engine spacers if not I hope you are going to replace it.

Luck with the engine mounts and header issues.

If I can find a big enough set screw, it'll definitely give me more clearance, it's just a question of how much. The nut and bolt in the shaft extension are definitely my focus right now. I'll look for some set screws while I'm out today.

The stock Explorer mounts and the mounts in my Ranger are the same because I have an Edge. Unless mine are bent (which I don't see), there should be no difference in the two.

Outside of using the stock exhaust manifold, the TMs are my only option unless I get custom ones made. All other aftermarket headers will run directly into the shaft. It's obvious that the TMs are made to clear the stock steering shaft by looking at their design. I knew they'd hit with the body lift, but they shouldn't have this much interference.

I'm aware of the torque output of the motor. I don't have any true numbers, but I shouldn't have any problem making ~350 ft-lb of torque. That's why I'm here looking for ways to eliminate or drastically shorten the height of the shims. There's no way I'd run my truck like this. It'd more that likely shear the bolts right off if I was in WOT.

I have a buddy on standby that will go get a driveshaft made for me while I'm out of town this week. Hopefully we can eliminate the shims instead, which should allow the driveshaft to fit better, but my contingency plan is in place.
