He builds bikes and his welds are that ugly? It was a serious question though, I don't know how to tell a weld is strong or not.

Ya, I am not trying to dis on the guys weld but they don't look very good. My grandpa was a welder for 30 years.

NICE!!! Quick question...i havn't actually searched hard for this answer yet.. But i noticed you got a new brake line for the axle. How do Spring-Over rangers do their brake lines?? Stock on an expo, it's a junction block on the driverside spring perch, then short hose(rubber) to the driver side caliper, then a long sweet over to the passenger caliper. Stock Ranger is a junction block right on top of the pumpkin, then equal length hoses going to the wheel cylinders. Can I run the stock ranger junction block, then shorten the ends up with a rubber hose to the calipers for a nice clean look? How do you plan on doing it?? Looks good so far Paint that bad boy up with some rust-o-leum!! Lol |

Heads up guys.......Just because a weld is pretty, does not mean it has full penetration.... Same goes opposite: If a weld is ugly, does not necessarily mean its not a good weld. Porosity, Foreign material, Lack of Penetration. |
Hence why I asked what makes a weld strong? How can you tell?

Beat it with a BFH, works for me. And the lines, the right hose fits on the left perfectly, all I need to do is fight a new right hose and use the stock Ranger hose/tee, then finish the lines. Hopefully my friends at Advance Auto will let me search in back to see what I can find.

Beating on stuff with a sledge and having the forces of a vehicle weighing several thousand pounds exerted on something are two entirely different things.
So what if he builds bikes for a living, that doesn't mean he does a good job or knows how to weld properly. Not ripping on ya, just want you and everybody else to be safe. |
UPDATE:
I got the brake lines figured out. Stock Ranger hose to custom hard lines to Explorer right rear hoses on each side. The e-brake will have to wait a while, but I don't use it much so it don't matter. Now, anyone willing to donate a shim kit, or any shims they might have left over? |

I was about to bump this thread yesterday, i'm not kidding....i just forgot. lol. Progress on mine? It's completely stripped down and naked. I put a couple $1's between the brake line and the housing.....and it did nothing. |
that welding looks fine to me... why some peoples weld looks so good is b/c they go back after with a grinder and smooth if off, which is best left to pros b/c if you grind too much your gonna weaken the weld...

That center chunk ontop the diff with the incoming line attached.....what is that? is that relocated explorer? do tell...i'm about to order my lines, and i want that setup. What you are using for the passenger rubber line.....i need that part number. I know i can use the expo passenger side on the driver side, its the passenger rubber that's got me messed up right now. |

J/W did you have to do any flaring of the metal brake lines? Or do the expo metal brake lines fit the ranger's metal fitting on top of the axle just fine?

Jordan, i'd run the ranger hardlines and shorten them up on the ends to meet up to the expo rubber lines....so yes, cut and flaring will be needed.
Ryan bent up new line i believe. |

People that are not confident in their ability often smooth out ugly welds with a grinder. No competant welder would unless a contract called for it. A good welder is proud of his welds and they look good untouched. I would have to agree, those welds look weak, your friend may be a pro but it looks like he has never used a stick machine. |
