Gearing Ratio's
Hello,
I'm trying to find the best gear ratio for my truck and want to proceed with it but I can't help but see many people put high gear ratio's in cars and have them go faster?
I currently have 3:10's upgrading the gears to 4:56 Ratio plus increasing tire size to a 33 over a 27. I want to make sure that that my drag will feel the same if not less after I get the new gears in. what I am saying is... will it be easier to get the truck rolling.... will first gear max out quicker, like at 10mph instead of 15 - 25mph, what I don't want to do is make my clucth so hard to work without stalling, that it is not worth it. I want to make sure if anything my clutch will be easier in 1st gear so I can crawl in 2X4 at a slower speed without stalling.
so what I am saying is with 4:56 gears, my truck will really be easy with 27 inch tires on it, and not have much highway speed, but with 33's my truck will be harder to get rolling, but have a better highway speed. I don't need top end, espically with a 4inch lift, I seem to push it on the highway already, don't wana find myself on the side, so maybe these gears will govern my speed a bit lower... hopefully... all I need is 65 and I am goody :)
Thanks!!

I have the 4.0 and 32" I'll be going with 4.10's as I need to consider gas mileage as well since I drive 72mi a day to and from work 5 days a week. 4.56 would hurt your MPG but I believe give you more grunt with 33". I think you'd be fine with 4.10's

The plan is to eventually get up to 35's, and again, the speed is no concern, I do little to no highway driving with the truck... can anyone tell me how many rpm 70 would be or approx? with 4:56 gears and then again for the 4:10's

With the automatic that has .75 o/d
4.10 gearing and 265/75R16 (31.9 actual sizing)
My speedo is only off by .6mph at 70 which tells you that the factory speedo
was way off..
It turns about 3050@80mph
If you want to see what gearing you have
(new tiresize/oldtiresize)x old gearing = new gearing
(33/27)x3.08= 3.76 to maintain the same ratio. So that would suggest 4.10's
I would however suggest 4.56's mine came with 4.10s when it had 31's
on it and you are talking about 35's. The gearing wont totally nuke your gas mileage only if you like to run 80mph on the highway. I'd say you will lose more
from the increased drag (both tires and air resistance)
I would not use 4.10's with 35's thats too low
note i never heard of 3.10 gearing so i used 3.08 in the example.

Hey,
That was a mistake on my part... Im pretty sure I have 3:27 not what I said I had. My axel code reads 91 which in fords book coresponds to:
91: open 8.8" Rated at 2750lbs 3.27 Gears
Would that mean that my truck would be geared extreemly low with 4:56, because I want it to crawl, rather than to speed.
