Cheap Chips

has any body seen those $2.99 chips on ebay?
do they work?
i thought was pretty crazy.

NO, they don't work. Most are just cheap resistors that fool the MAF into thinking the airflow is different than it really is. The ECU eventually figures it out, and fixes the fuel/air mixture. It's not worth the risk to the engine.

John Griggs did some work trying this idea, but using real test data and calibration. Check his old posts and you should be able to find it. This was on his 3.0 enigne.

I thought someone actually took it to a dyno and saw it lost RWHP...or was that another hoax mod

Most of them are just a 5-cent resistor installed in the Intake Air Sensor signal wire. The intention is to fool the PCM into thinking that intake air is cooler than it is. This will make the PCM advance the timing which would make more power if premium fuel is also used. This actually works to a certain extent in older Rangers and some other cars.

What John found out is that the IAT input to the spark calculation is no longer used in the late model Ranger calibrations so the mod does nothing to the spark.

I guy dyno'd a mustang with one and lost rwhp... I believe he was there when Doug got his dyno?
