Ignition works sometimes
i have a 1994 Ranger. Just bought it. Modified for off road, 6” lift Dana 30 front end etc. 33” tires. Sometimes when I try start the truck it just clicks and nothing happens. If I keep trying it then starts. I put a new battery in it. And I still have the problem. Doesn’t happen all the time maybe every 5th time. Is it an ignition problem or starter issue?

If you hear a CLICK(in engine bay) when key is turned to START then not an ignition switch issue, or Neutral switch problem
It would be battery cable or starter motor issue, if battery is OK
The CLICK should come from the Starter Relay on inner fender, sometimes call starter solenoid
Neutral switch
Manual trans Ranger will have a Clutch Pedal switch that needs to be closed to activate starter, pedal down
Automatic has a shifter switch on drivers side of transmission that needs to be close to activate starter, trans in P or N
Starter motor draws 60amps, or more
That's why the battery cables are so big going from battery to starter, positive and negative, BOTH need to be able to pass 60+ amps
DC voltage means BOTH positive and negative need to pass the same AMPS
So if the negative cable can only pass 20 amps then positive cable can only pass 20amps, so BOTH connections matter
In 1994 there is also a starter solenoid on the top of starter motor, the smaller cylinder, it also needs to CLICK closed to connect starter motor to battery positive cable and to push the starter motor gear out to engage flywheel, so it's a relay/solenoid
