hello RF I've got an '09 4.0L sport 4X4, the truck is stock except for a K&N drop in filter and a tornado, this thing is horrendous on gas and i haven't even lifted it yet i planned on putting bigger tires and a new muffler and yes i know it will suck more gas with those on but still, if its this bad already how much worse is it going to get, right now i get 212 KM. for 40L. so i pay 40 bucks to get to work and back every 2 days. my buddy gets better mileage on his ram hemi. is this something i can expect from rangers or is it maybe just a fluke with my truck and i should consult ford about it, i should also mention I'm at 23'000 km, and am due for my second oil change. seeing how they recommend it every 12000. not to sure if oil could be the problem I've also noticed a strange yet small vibration almost like there is something stuck in the tire yet i see nothing and i think the front alignment is off but that i can always get ford to fix. so what do you guys think and has anyoen else had this many problems with a new truck.

 

From what I heard, the Tornado would be the problem... thats at least what I've heard...

 

take that tornado and chuck it as hard as you can at the person who sold/gave it to you

 

Your mileage may be a little worse than mine but not far off. I was warned by the Ford salesman when I bought the truck that it wouldn't be any better on gas than a full-size. (because of it being 4x4, and the biggest engine, and having 4.10 gears) He was right. I get 17-18 miles to the gallon on the highway and I don't know what city. I drive 200km per day for work, and it costs me $30 a day.

I upgraded from the stock 255/70/16s to 265/75/16 mud terrains, really aggressive and they howl on the highway but my gas mileage didn't get any worse. Because of the bigger tire and having the same gears the rpms are lower at highway speed which probably helps save gas..

Anyway you're not alone, hopefully someone else will be able to help more. I'm just glad my girlfriend has a little Sunfire so we take it on long trips.

 

Here's the solution.........lift off the pedal on the right.....LOL

212km's for 40L of fuel in the winter sounds about right. With a 70Lish tank you'll be getting the winter norm of somewhere in the 400km's per tank.

I thought the 3.0L were bad on fuel, sounds like the 4.0L is just as nasty.

Just remember that the winter grade fuels blow the mileage out of wack. I'll get around 500km's to a tank in the summer, and low to mid 400's in the winter. Just a fact of life......you can always buy a Prius.

 

thats about what I got last year on winter gas. At the end of the day ya it sucks BUT you did buy a truck. Bad gas mileage kinda comes with the territory.

 

ya i know trucks need more gas its just kind of a let down that i pay as much as say a full sizer would take yet i don't get the towing or the passenger space, maybe next time i should try diesel.

 

i have a 2001 4.0 4x4. the factory sticker (which i still have) say's: city 15 Hwy 19

so, if your getting around those numbers, thats normal for your truck.

 

The 4.0 sucks on mileage for sure I try never to let my truck idle very long when it gets cold out because it seems to really kill the mileage. About 2 weeks ago I only got about 155 miles on a tank ( I fill up at a 1/4 tank) but it didnt go over -10*F that week and It idled so I could stay warm about 30min a day.

 

i get 450km on a tank and a 16 year old truck... i change the oil every 5000km. i can tell when my truck is pretty much due for an oil change because it starts to run rougher....

 

okay, my turn,, take out the air cleaner, and clean the maf sensor with a good maf friendly cleaner spray, than take off the tube to the throttle body and clean the throttle body with the same spray cleaner, that will make a big difference,
also on the side of the upper manifold the is a idle air control device,, it may be dirty inside too, should be just 2 bolts to remove it, , and a wire connector, , spray it down as well till it is clean inside, than reinstall all of that stuff, and try it than,
if you could , post a pic of your engine , and i will use ms paint to highlight the parts i am talking about,, ,

i have an older , 96 Explorer with a 4.0 in it, and even in the winter i still get 17-19 mpg, and i have 360,000 kilometers on my engine,,

 

I vote to ban anyone who uses kilometers on the site!
I'm too lazy to convert the mileage, but the best I have ever seen from a 4.0L (OHV and SOHC) is 18mpg. And that was for stock vehicles, well maintained, mild temps in the spring and driving like a grandma on the highway only. After lifting any of them, I got around 14mpg no matter what. Mileage during the winter is worse.
Take the tornado out and throw it at yourself for wasting the money, disturbing the intake airflow isn't helping anything.

 

what is your driving style like? i still get mid 400kms out of a tank. i agree lay off the skinney. i only use my 4wd when i need it. i know i don't get as much snow as you guys up past london, but that is pretty crappy.

12k for an ol change is a little far. my dealer says go 7k at the most. your truck is a year younger then mine but the milage is somewhat close. i'm at 35k and the breakin period for both has come and gone.

get rid of the tornado. those things are a waste of money. like nate asked, what gears do you have out back?

you have pretty much screwed your vehicle warranty

my dealership clearly informed me that my warranty clearly stipulates ,, engine and oil filter changes every 5000 kilometers ( no exceptions what-so-ever )

 

i agree, my dealer says, 5-6k. 7 is stretching it with they way oils are produced nowadays. i do 6 at the most.

 

it's only got 23000 k on it... i highly doubt dirty sensors are his problem... that being said, cleaning it doesn't hurt any...

my ranger, 07 fx4 4.0L... 4.10's my last 4 tanks have been:
475km on 67L
439km on 62L
450km on 65L
402km on 57L

several of those tanks were 100% 4x4... i drive, on average 80-90% hiway, at a speed of between 110 and 130 (very rarely even hit 130)usually cruise at just over 120 on the spedo (roughly 110-115 actual) i was getting like 16 hiway when i was doing 160... too expensive...

AND GET RID OF THE TORNADO!!!!!!

even if the theory behind it worked to the point that it would gain a considerable amount, the butterfly valve in the throttle body stops any swirling motion in the air... all the tornado does is add restriction to your intake, which takes power away from the motor, as it has to work harder for the same amount of air

 

i'd guess that the ecu is throwing more fuel into the motor since it's working harder to get that air in.

my last four tanks;

509 on 70.5L
499 on 69.8L
516 on 71.95L
513 on 70.84L

that is mixed 4wd and 2wd, mostly city between 50-70kms/hour and some freeway at 110kms/hour.

 

Several of those tanks were 100% 4x4? While you were driving 120 on the freeway 80-90% of the time??

 

i wondered that and hoped not. nate i saw your post, that small of a jump in tire size wouldn't affect milage that much, but you will use alittle more since there is a little extra rolling weight to get moving.

 

The colder it get the worse the mileage will be.

Last tank was about 12mpg with 15 degrees or so being the average.

 

i just got 380 miles out of my last tank with 20.25 gallons to fill it up.


18.75ish mpg out of that tank. im not a 4x4 but thats my best numpers since i bought the truck. 10,700 MILES on the truck.

 

ok i've removed the tornado so i'll see hwo it does this week i do alot of highway driving and i keep her around 120 usually maybe higher, i have 3.73 gears stilll havent got th oil change yet but i'm thinking i should alsp check my fluids soon when i was swapping my headlights yesterday i noticed the power steering was at min. i wonder if that could be the cause for the vibration.

 

i tihnk there was 1 of those tanks that was between 90 and 100% 4x4 and it was 80-90% hiway,... i just put a new airfilter in (clean one, as my old one got drenched in mud) and hopefully i will notice a difference in the mileage...

over 500 a tank eh moris? i guess the difference on the hiway between the 3.73's and the 4.10's makes a good difference...

 

Honestly i didnt see my best mpg till about the 20k mile mark and my dealer told me that from the get go. Also this winter I have seen a drop in mpg. Im prolly getting 16-17 combined now compared to 19-21 in the summer. Thats just how it goes. Finally skinny pedal + tornado = horrible gas mileage.

i have also seen those numbers best ive seen was 320 mile a tank. but i do have 3.73s so i reckon thats the difference.
