Alright, so I made sure to search around before posting anything that would be redundant.

I've got an '02 extended cab, and I pretty much want to turn my truck into a bada** mountain man survival machine. I know some of you guys make sure to throw an axe into your gear if you are going camping or on a long trip, or anything like that. My question is, does anyone have an axe permanently mounted in their cab? My idea was to mount one horizontally against the rear wall of the truck, just above the rear cupholders.

If anybody has any relevant info, advice, or especially pictures, I'd love to hear/see it!
Almost forgot - I'm looking into the legalities and things like that, so don't worry, I won't do anything illegal.

I'm not sure about the legalities, but it sound a little dangerous to have and axe inside the cab, What if, you have a roll over? Make sure it's secured very well.

Why not get a headache rack and mount the axe to it, like a lot of peeps do with Hi-Lifts?

 

Yeah I am considering a few different options. It was just a new idea, so it's something to keep in mind for later on down the road. I have a couple big projects that I need to take care of first.

 

Headache, toolbox, custom mount on the inner bed area(along the fender). You're using it outside of the truck, so no reason on taking it into the inside.. idk about you but I'd hate for sap to get into my interior. Just make sure you have a way of securing it... like a locking cable that runs through the handle?

 

Yeah I saw a Tundra that had one custom mounted on one of the inside walls of his bed, that looked pretty sick. I've looked at a few Headache Racks, but not really seen any that caught my eye. Most of them look like they should be used for contractors or construction workers, so I'm not sure if it would be weird on my truck.

I also spent some time researching roof racks that mount onto the top of the cab instead of onto a topper, and Defender makes some pretty nice ones. I think I'll just have to wait it out and see what I feel like doing once I get all my major mods in place. (You know, tint, bedliner, cold air, etc.)

 

i would rather put my axe in the truck also, outside it is going to rust, axes don't generally stay wet for extended periods of time... unlike when you axe is on your truck in the rain, all night all day...

tool box is probably best bet...

 

Yeah I thought it would be pretty cool to mount it across my rear wall above where the cupholders are. I'd have to fab some kind of sweet custom mount though to make sure it was super secure. It was just a thought I had, the idea is gonna go on the backburner while I take care of some more important mods in the next few months.

 

you know how gun racks look on quads with the U shape and the piece of rubber that strapa across the front? you could bend some metal and do that..just my 2 cents

 

now that you mention gun rack... there's got to be a good solid way to mount a gun in a truck... why not modify this, to work for an axe?

 

Yeah this is kind of the concept I had in mind. I wish somebody had some pics of an inside the cab axe mount but I haven't found any.

Here's where I put my shovel and axe. I always have them, never in the way, dont take up any bed space and have never had them come loose.

Thats an interesting idea WoodsRider. I hadn't considered anything like that, kind of a cool concept. After I get mine lifted up this summer I might consider it. Thx for the pics!

 

you can get a rear window gun rack at walmart for under $20. might work

 

ahhh walmart... is there anything they DON'T carry? they carry bullets, shotgun shells and other ammo, even up here in canada, where gun laws are strict! (no guns at walmart though)

 

I scoped out some gun racks online. I like the general idea of a couple of them. I saw one that mounted in the cab, on the roof of the truck. However, I think the Ranger has too low of a roof for something like that. I could possibly modify one of those mounts for against the rear wall of my truck, but I'm not sure. I like the ideas, though. Lets keep em coming and eventually (cuz we are bada**es) we are gonna come up with something super sick.

 

Sounds like a good way to get an ax to the head in a collision...

Don't know if there are any log trucks around there, if so, go check out how they mount their axe on the cab guard. On mine if I needed to I could have the axe in my hand before my feet hit the ground(gravity holds it in place pretty much an industry standard around here the way we run them) if I needed it in a hurry and I have no prob with mine rusting but I have soft covers on the edges( I like mine as close to shaving sharp as I can get it) which don't need to be removed if your in a hurry. If you had a rollbar or something like that I'm sure you could adapt the way it's done on a log truck with a little creativity.Could be mounted on the inside of the bed on the sides using the same method.
