not sure if possible on obd2 but california passed some dumbass law that wont let the autozone loan the reader out anymore so i either have to buy one unless you guys can think of something .... thats tommorows plan

anyways, i would ask what the code might be, no strange behavior from the truck other than idling at 3k when put into neutral after being at freeway speeds for a while ... if i hit the gas it then goes back to normal idle speed.

im not super worried about it but smog is coming up in july

scan guage 2 ! will clear the codes for you before and help you on other things!

You'll need some sort of code reading tool for any Ranger 1995 or newer. There's no way around it. Harbor Freight sells inexpensive readers that will do the job. Last time I looked, they listed at $40 but were often on sale for $30.

 

yea shops around here suck though and usually try and charge like $65

 

yea harbor freight is cool closest one is 20 miles ... might go and pick one up tommorow though

 

most of the oil changing places will scan it for free if you drive up.

which is basically a throttle position sensor which explains the occasional high idle

im told its a $69 part ... anyone ever replace one of these? How much of a pita is it

i can't comment on our trucks, but i know my 89 mustang (EEC-IV) you had to set the voltage, the ideal voltage was .98v, and was done by putting a pin or sewing needle into one of the wires coming off of the TPS, putting the positive lead of a volt meter to that, and the other to ground, and turning the sensor with the screws loose... this shows the computer that the throttle is completely closed, or is completely open...

our trucks (odb-2) may or may not have a similar procedure
