Instrument Cluster Guages stopped working
Hello all,
I have a 2004 Ford Ranger. Last week all of the gauges (Speedometer, Tachometer, Fuel, and Engine Temp) just quit working. Even the odometer does not come on anymore. However, the lighting on it still works, and the all the icons (i.e. low fuel light, engine light, brake light, etc..) Still work on it. I brought it to a body shop and they ran some diagnostics on it, and they said the whole cluster needs to be replaced. I'm not sure whether or not to believe this, since half of it seems to still work. He said the board was bad, but that shouldnt directly affect the guages, should it? Especially since the electronics on it still work? Thanks so much for your help..

I have the same problem (not sure about the speedo). Turned on the ignition , the gauges did a little dance and it fired up . All fuses ok ( PTC relay is missing ) Battery is duff but charges off the alternator ? Everything else works. Any ideas ?
Thanks Jim
Thanks Jim
In the Smart Junction Box(SJB) in the passenger side kick panel there are 2 fuses for the dashboard, #10(10amp) and #33(5amp)
Check both, check with ohm meter or replace don't just "look" and say its OK
Most gauges are run by a micro processor in the dash on the '04.
There is a way to test the system, read here: How-To: - Instrument Cluster Diagnosis | FordForumsOnline.com
Google: Ford Instrument Cluster Self Diagnostic Mode
For more info on tests and codes

Hi Ron
Thanks for the reply. I am not sure your info will apply to me .I am in the UK so have a UK Ranger ( same as Mazda B2500) It's 2005 with 2.5 diesel engine .. when you say " passenger " side , is that the right when viewed from the back ?
Thanks Jim

Well you got me there.
Never worked on a right hand drive car or truck so can't say what parts are reversed.
SJB has the cab fuse box in it, if that helps, so if you know where the fuses are you found the SJB
Interesting though, I always thought the UK had the BT50/T6 International Rangers, which outside of the name don't have anything in common with North American Rangers
