I have noticed a little bit of oil on my front passenger A-arm for while but it has getting progressivly worse lately. It seems to be coming out of the first "black thing" but there is also a drop or two coming from the cv shaft. Does anybody know where it is leaking from and what it is going to take to fix it? Thnaks.

 

Think that looks similar to mine when it happend awhile back when i first got my ranger. What i ended up doing was just changing out the whole pump and unit because it kept leaking and made a squealing noise when i turned the wheel. try changing the hoses, and go from there. then id also recommend getting lucas power steering stop leak.

 

I checked all the hoses and the pump and none of them are leaking. It seems to becoming out of the black tube.

 

Leaking out of the bellows lookin thing? Mine did that for a while, i replaced the boot and it stopped for a while

 

Yes that is where it seems to be coming from.

 

if it is leaking from inside of the bellows, the piston seal on the rack is bad and it is most beneficial to replace the rack. it could be coming from the right assist line that is by the bellows. first, remove the bellows and look to see if the piston seal is leaking, make sure it is not coming through the vent tube that connects the two bellows together. DO NOT USE LUCAS STOP LEAK it will cause nothing but problems with a rack

 

thanks for the info. i didnt get to it this weekend because i had to do a few other things to it while i was home. Next time im home i will try to remove the bellows and see if the seal is leaking.

 

If the seal was leaking would i just need to replace the rack? How hard is it to replace it?

IMO its too thick to use in a rack, it likes to cause hard steering and premature pump failure

 

Ok how do you get the bellows off? I undid the clip thing on the outside but i dont know how to undo the inside part.

bump! i looked in my ford service repair manual and couldnt find anthing about removing the bellows. can anybody help?

 

I put a new bellows on and so far it isnt leaking anymore. Granted im sure it is still leaking on the inside but that comes another day.

 

Leaking inside the boot is a "given".

That's why the boots have the fitting at the bottom sucking the leaked fluid back in to the reservoir. No further repair required Zach, except the alignment.

 

the fitting on the boot is at the top of the boot and it is a vent for when you turn the wheel so the boot doesnt pop off because it is air tight. the line from the boot goes to the opposite side to equalize pressure

there should be no fluid in the boot at any time

 

actually the place where the hose connected was on the bottom of the old boot and the hose dosent really move. so i dont think it could have slipped down. I can get a pic of it tomorrow if you want.

Ok so you are partly right. It does go over to the other side but it is kinda on the bottom. Now it looks like my drivers side boot is leaking slightly. it hasnt started to drip yet though.

you need to remove both boots and check to see which side is leaking...either way, the rack will need to be replaced if one of the piston seals is leaking

 

im almost posative that the dirvers side was leaking when i put the new boot on but i cant really be sure. Whats the danger of driving it while its leaking?

haha well obviously. If the pump runs out of fluid will it get damaged or will i just not be able to steer?

 

keep it full. it will cause damage to the pump by running it dry
