I plan on trading in my Honda on a gorgeous Sonic Blue, 03, Ext. Cab, 4x4, 4L, manual tranny, 117k, tremendous shape except for 8 yr old wear and tear on the paint in the bed. Asking $6300. Seems like a hell of a deal to me, let me know if you think otherwise.

Ive driven the truck and inspected it quite well but would like to know what kind of things go wrong with Rangers of this gen, and if there are certain things I should pay attention to or look for that could potentially lead to a problem when I check it out one last time.

Yeah, if you're not sure what to look for I'd take it to a reputable mechanic and have them look it over. You definitely don't want to buy it just to find out there is something wrong with it.

Depends on the condition of the truck and even then nobody could really say.

 

with those kind of miles do you still think it is a good deal? the trade in offer was generous so i would say hes selling it for around 6.
p.s. im a high school student that needs a truck to get to the motocross races, yes i understand its bad mpg and so forth, and i personally feel like this truck is just about what i need, but dont want or have the cash to throw at it constantly, should i keep looking?

It's hard to say what may have to be done in the not so distant future with a higher mileage vehicle. I do know that any vehicle you find for that kind of money will have quite a few miles. Like I said, if you are interested, I'd take it to a reputable mechanic and have it checked out.

 

toms, i only crawled under it and check for solidarity and it seems to be fine. i will definitely have the ford garage put it up on the lift and check it out.

klc, thanks, i needed to hear that. that is essentially the conclusion i have come to, for 6 grand youre not going to find too many cars that arent unpredictable with there problems and/or high in mileage, hell my accord needed a tranny a month after i bought it.

also, i am fairly mechanically inclined and have access to tools to do smaller stuff (bearings, brakes, exhaust and so on), so i am only concerned with major things like the 4wd.

Dude, I got mine (2001 XLT Ext cab 4x4) with 105,500 miles, and it needed $800 worth of mechanical work, (in a shop) new shocks, and brakes. Other than that, and a filthy interior (which I cleaned immaculately myself) it was in AMAZING shape, with the same bed damage. The mechanical issues that it had were not terrible, but expected after 100grand miles. I paid $7,000 for it, and it would have been $9500 if i had the dealership make sure it was 100% mechanically in shape. i'd say get it, then take it to a reputable mechanic. If you can do the work yourself, tell him not to do it. Thats what I did. But I did have him do the diff work, and re-weld an exhaust hanger, and replace a CV joint that was on its way out. I did my own work on the brakes and shocks. Well worth it.

 

oh, and on things to look for, underbody damage, make sure its not been wheeled too hard, and rust.

 

The m5od also has slave issues if I'm not mistaken
