Just got into mountain/ trail riding and am absolutely hooked; use to throw my bmx bikes in the bed but am looking for more secure ways for more expensive bikes. Looking for some ideas for in bed bike racks, doesn't matter if it's fork or wheel mounted. Looking to build my own.

 

I have a store bought one that I use in this truck, does your bike have a 20mm axle or just a regular one? This rack is meant for just regular forks but if you take out the tube it clamps onto a 20mm axle. Pics aren't great but I can get more if you want to see it better.





In my old truck (flareside) I just had a piece of 1/4x2" flat stock and made brackets to bolt on the tie downs inside the bed. For my 20mm axle bikes I had something like this welded on: http://images.jensonusa.com/large/ra...z00blu__15.jpg

But most of the time I just use this one below, it's way quicker/easier to load the bikes on and then I still have full use of the bed, and I can just used a cable to lock the bikes to the hitch. And I can use it on the Focus too!

 

I just hang my Norco over the tailgate, lol. Will be looking for/building something similar to FULLSCALE's bed mount someday.

 

a little pricy but it's an option i'm considering if i get back into biking agian.

Dakine pad for the bed is the best. ill get a pic up tomrrow. so nice and it doesnt budge. my shore doesnt, and hopefully if i get lucky enough to get on transiton next year, it will be even better

they all have the quick release. This is what i want but can't weld: Bike Racks for Trucks, Mountian Bike Racks by Pipeline Racks My idea is taking a 2x4, running it the width of the truck and taking 3 of those blockheads and bolting it onto the 2x4. I'm just worried about hitting the front brakes with no disc in them and locking them up.

 

Never had any problem with mine. Just stick a piece of cardboard or something between the pads if you're worried about it!

 

Those do work great if you're always around your truck but I like having mine bolted in so it's at least a little work for someone to grab the bikes if I'm away from my truck!

 

i just finished mine, i scrapped the original idea; used pvc so i wouldnt have to take the wheels off. its in my friends truck right now cause we goin riding in the am but ill get some pics

 

i will get a picture of mine tomorrow but i made it out of 1x1 square tubing and got some of the fork mounts from a local bike shop and mounted those to it and then mounted the bar to my bed cover brakets.....can still use the bed cover with the rack in

 

def get some pics of it, do you leave it on all the time? and do you think a roll up tonnaeu would be able to close on it? it looks like there's no padding on top of them.

yeah transition is pretty much top notch in my eyes, yes there are argurably better bikes, but probly not a better company.

as for the Dakine mat, i do leave it on for prolonged time preiods, but i do pull it off when its wet out or it will be in the hot hot sun for a while. The padding on the top is not great but i used conduet padding in between the tail gate and the pad its self. with that it keeps the bikes in super snugg and doesnt move much. some people still throw a strap on them but i have flown around and gone over big bumps and rail road tracks and cornered hard and they dont move...but anything is possible. i think for suttling or long drives they are awsome. takes all of 5 seconds to put your bike in.
i have encountered one bike that sitts in funky tho, a 2008 demo 7 with older boxxer fork with the smaller stanctions. however, another friend has a 08 demo 8 with 888's and they fit fine nothing. my shore 3 with totems(huge stanctions 40mm baby) dosnt move a bit. i can haul 4 bikes comfortably and have them not clank to gether and get thrashed lol

I just put my BMX bike in the middle of the bed and put I tie down strap on it. I'll get Pictures the next time I go to my parents house.

 

dan you got some nice bikes haha.i liked the dakine pad because it would cover up all my dents on my tailgate but it wouldn't work for me cause i have a tonneau cover. do you have the large or small sized pad?

i have the small. the larges are for full sizers. i think you could run the dakine pad, even with the cover. you could roll it up and tie it back some how. maybe roll it into its self....that is to say its a soft cover lol

Looks good! Does it hit the front disc at all?

 

both bikes barely hit it the pvc by probably 1/8 of a mm but they prob rub a little when you're driving. Is that bad though?

 

I just tie my mtb down like I do my dirtbike. Two tie downs to the handlebars and tie each to a front tow hook. Hasn't moved at all, and the rear doesn't kick around at all either. Some people bug out about the suspension being compressed for long periods of time, but I made suspension-savers for both of them out of some wood. I haven't transported multiple bikes in my truck really, so I guess this is useless info haha.

 

even if it did i think the pvc would flex out, rather than the disk hit. im guessing thoose were 7" (aka 180mm). 203mm ones i would be slightly concerned, but not much.


tie downs are cool, i used them forever! but if you are doing any shuttling or hauling more than 2 bikes they are a hand full. plus i found i got more dings and paint chips that way.
as for the fork being compressed that long, its unlikly to cause damage....to a degree. with an air fork and higher comperssion you may be prone to wearing the seals out slightly faster but still unlikly

 

you don't really need a bike rack at all, just strap down both sides of the handle bars to some lower holes/holds in the bed, it only took 2 straps to secure my brothers 700lb bike, plus an extra rope to keep the back tire down
