what is this chip looking thing next to hood release??? 2010 ranger xl 4 cyl.

2010 ranger xl. 4 cyl regular cab. I just got the truk brand new off the ford dealer and I noticed this chip looking thing next to the hood release its like a chip that slides into this socket thing and theres this red LED that I have not seen come on and it has some wires going somewhere?? what is that for?? what would happen if I remove that little circuit board. Upon delivery and I asked the sales guy what that was: he simply said "oh don't worry about it".... not that it bothers me, but I would just like to know what its purpose is....

Does the socket look like this? To the right of the hood release? Its probably the OBDII port, I have no clue what it could be. Get a pic of it if you can.

Unless I'm mistaken no Ranger has even come factory with trailer brake controller wiring.

some dealers will add them i know the guy i got my truck from had everything wired up from the stealership.

i know my OBDII port doesnt have a red led though but seeing as his is new it very well might?

we need a pic end of story haha. i haven't been in a 10' ranger to see where the OBDII is...mines right above my brake pedal and hes saying right next to the hood release so i'm not sure of his definition of "next to" lol

a pic would help ill check my 2010 tommorow to see if there is anything like that under the dash

if its plugged into the obdII port pictured about then i think its for the dealerships universal key fob when i was looking at mine the ladie walked up and hit one button and 6 trucks all unlocked at the same time

it's a tracking devise. why else would the salesman tell you not to worry about it!

If it's plugged into the OBDII port, I'd bet it's one of those cheap code readers that translates the code into a series of flashes of the LED.

i have this same thing in my truck (havent noticed any LEDs though), it does sit next to the hood release. and on mine it is the OBDII port (just used it two weeks ago). in my truck it goes -- BRAKE release -- PORT -- hood release. the port is directly under the steering wheel.

Any vehicle manufactured after mid 1995 (I believe) has an OBDII port under the knee board. Someone correct me if I'm a year or two off. Before Mid 95 are sometimes under the hood, and are OBDI.
