So I plan on getting a line-x bed liner sprayed in in the near future, but I'm not sure which way I wanna go. They can do it either over the rails or under. Since my truck has the plastic bed caps on it already, I'd have to take them off along with the 2 sided tape that holds them on if I wanted over the rails.

So my question is: Do you have a line-x liner? If so, over the rails or under? Was it difficult to get the stock bed cap off? Post pics too if possible.

 

I have mine over the rails.

 

The factory bed rail caps or aftermarket? Thats your call if you want to remove them and are you really gonna use your truck bed for work and etc? I have LineX under the rail but I dont use my truck bed for anything and I have the factory bed rail caps.

Split the difference and go with the canopy over the rail. It has worked out really well for me.

 

Here's the only pic I have from it's inaugural drive off the dealer's lot. Unfortunately I'm blocking the view, but you get the gist of it. They're factory bed rails on it right now and for now it's just my DD, so there won't be much going back there that could cause much damage aside from the odd trip to the dump. Is it worth the extra $50-75 for over the rails? Anyone take the factory ones off before?

 

I would do over the rail for two main reasons....

1. the plastic bed rails leave marks wherever the plastic touches the truck,

2. You will want to kick your self the first time you set something up on your bed rail and is scratches the heck out the the paint,

I'm going to go over the rail when I get my '03 done this winter. It has a few minor scratches on the top of the bedrails but what do you expect for a nearly 8 year old used truck. I do like the way Mikerider did his...thats a great idea. I'll be happy to get rid of the OEM plastic bedliner (aka rust/corrosion accelerator). I pulled it out once since I got the truck to wash underneath it and man, it is a mess. Lots of the paint is gone on the bed floor. Make sure you request that they pull your bed mounting bolts also so they dot get coated over.

go over the rail. youll be kicking yourself every day after that if you dont. i ran into the same problem. and just said screw it do over the rail. im sure glad i did because if i didnt there wouldnt be to much paint left on my bed rails. i toss stuff over the rails all the time. or lean stuff on them. over the rail is the way to go

Thats what I call over the rail and then some...definately protected!

 

Mine was done about 3 years ago. No fading as they applied a UV protectant.

 

KLC what is your tonneau cover? I like it, very flat.

 

I went over the rails and i'm glad i did. With a yellow truck, that little bit of black along the top of the bed made a nice contrast that I feel made the truck look nicer. I actually didn't do anything with the tape residue left behind on the bed rails. I left it on there and assumed they'd be prepping the surface anyways. They never said anything about it or charged me any extra to remove it. I'm very happy with the results. I got mine done 2 years ago. No fading yet. I don't remember, but I don't think I got the UV protectant.

 

Can one of you open the tailgate and take a pic? I'm trying to remember how far down on the very bottom back of the bed they go and how far down on the tailgate they spray.

 

Do over the rail for sure! Mine wasn't done like that, it still has the plastic rails and I'm not happy with them. The Line-X is great though, I'll be going back to get the rails done!

Yeah, they sprayed over the bed bolts on my last Ranger also. I'm going to make sure they dont on this application. Its not a big deal to get the coating off of them if you need to get the bed off though but what are the odds that it will ever need removed.

I was thinking of asking them how much extra it would cost to do the rear wheel-well bed metal also up underneath. Probably more than I'd want to pay I'm sure.
