I just read a post that lists some of the things that go wrong with the ranger when it's under 100.000 miles. That surprised me. I wouldn't expect to put any money into any car/truck I buy until at least 130,000 miles.

Do you understand that people drive differently? My dad can drive a vehicle for 20 years without any maintenance but my sister can't drive a car for a few years without having to replace something major. Companies don't make vehicles to last forever. that would be stupid, then they have no reason to sell you replacement parts or a new vehicle.
This concept shouldn't be foreign to you. companies like toyota just must realize all their drivers are pu$$y hippies who drive slowly and won't break parts.

you just never know, maintaining things is the best way to help them last, but ive seen things go bad for no apparent reason at low miles, and stock alternators/starters make it to the 200K mark and still be o.k. its a mechanacal object, the best you can do is keep up with scheduled maintenence and hope for the best.
first ranger i had which was a 93 2wd 4.0 had about 160,000 on it before the motor went out and i beat the hell out of it only thing i did was change the oil and air filter,now the ranger i got now at about 60,000 the alternator & battary went out and it's a 2001 4wd 4.0 beat the crap out of it and it only lasted 100,000 miles,it all depends on how you drive and how you use it really and how well you keep it up

I got 120k on my focus and I just changed my alternator a couple of months ago. Everything else is factory.
I think any vehicle today can go 100K without anything major. Alt, water pump and items like that are minor things. I normally do 100K on my original brakes with pad left and then replace everything cause I figure they earned it.
You have to remember that no 2 parts can be exactly the same. There may be differences when the metal is poured, of course machining you can have run out on the machine. Some things you can have real tight control of and some you can't.
When you design things you have to give the machinist tolerance to work by. One gear maybe a on the large side and the other gear maybe on the small side and this can cause early wear or something else.
Like others stated each driver is different. One big problem is not letting things warm up before beating on it. Sure you can turn the key on a cold day and drive normal without too much trouble but if you decide to race someone at the redlight before the vehicle is warmed up you can cause some really bad damage.

I pretty much expect maintenance things like ball joints, tie rod ends ect to go out between 60-80k. Anything over that is a bonus lol

All cars need maintenance. The Ranger is quite possibly one of the cheapest vehicles to maintain. Parts are dirt cheap and readily available. Things wear out on all cars. My 1999 4Runner is going in for a main seal, transmission gasket, timing belt, all engine seals and water pump this week....176k miles....I'd charge $1000 for this job, but I'm doing it myself at my shop
Keeping the fluids clean and changed is only half the work...if you're going to keep a car forever, the idea is that you eventually replace everything on the car over time...it's nearly always cheaper than taking on a new car. I drove a 1982 Volvo from 1982 until 2008 with nothing but scheduled maintenance and the occasional pump, seal, fuse, hose, belt, etc. Original motor and transmission...about 5 clutches, though. :-) And volvos aren't regarded as being the most reliable cars. Never confuse durability with reliability.
Stuff wears out...it's like anything. I've never had a car hold up as well as my B4000. Zero problems in 75k miles...only scheduled maintenance.
