the worst part of my first body lift that i did on my last truck, was actually jacking the damn thing up. everywhere i put the jack, it wasnt enough to lift in high enough. i set my 2 ton jack on an 8x8 and then a 4x4 on top of the jack, and it would always move and was just a pita! im plannin on body lifting my newer 4wd, and i dont want it to take 3 nights to do.

 

Chaulk your jack so it doesn't move. Like u would do a wheel.

 

I did my on the grass, the body isn't that heavy and the jack wheels will sink into the ground and lock it there. Just be sure to put the 4x4 on a cross-member on the body and not just on flat steel or you'll buckle the body. I did and I occasionally have a clunking noise.
I finished mine in less than 4 hours, and I had to weld up the rotted mounts on the frame.

 

theres a lip just by the doors, thats where i jacked it up from. didnt seem to have any problems

 

Gonna jump in and ask on this topic.....where is the best place to jack up the front? Then place jack stands for added safety?

 

i usually jack on the cross member and support with jack stands on the frame

 

to jack up the front, jack it up from the front crossmember and put jackstands on the crossmember. To jack up the cab. Theres a lip under the body by the doors. Just jack up one side, put thebolts in, and then jack the other sided up and do the same.

 

so i just use one 4x4 and have it be the length of the cab and just jack it up?

also, i thought about buying a 20-ton air assisted hydraulic bottle jack. would that be easier?

 

I just used a 4x4 to let my jack reach higher. I used it vertical, not horizontal on that lip and it worked fine.

Also I wouldnt use that bottle jack, all youll need to do is make sure the bolts are all the way loose and barely grabbing on the opposite side of the truck. Then when you lift the actual side your on from that lip it should barely give itself enough room to lift up to get the blocks in. I had alittle trouble in a few spots and needed to add a piece of wood or move my jack around but other than that you should be good.

 

I use 4x4's horizontal under the jack 2 high, one on the top of the jack (pot) (pun not intended), and that gives me 8in of lift extra.

I did it a bit differently. I put a chain on my front towhooks, and hooked my hilift to the chain. Jacked up the front of the truck, and lowered the body onto jack stands.

 

I used a cherry picker with 3 towels folded up on it so my paint wouldn't get all scratched up. It only took me one day to put mine on tho...
