Is my coil pack going out?
Is my coil pack going out?
For about the past 2 years my engine has always had a bit of a shudder at idle. I got a CEL code of P0302, misfire in cyl 2. I finally replaced my plugs and wires a month ago and it seemed to get better. Today I was driving and it was really bad. It sounded as if there was a ping on the right side of the motor. My CEL started flashing, I pulled the P0302 code again. I shut it down and started it again, as soon as it idled down it started shaking again. I limped it home the mile, I was flooring it and it was barely moving. I pulled it and checked the plug and it looked fine. Could my coil pack be going out?
Sounds like it. An easy way to tell is to just start unplugging the wires one at a time from the coil itself while the truck is idling. Don't ground yourself while you do it or it stings only a tiny bit for a second if you get zapped. The idle should be affected no matter what plug you remove, if one doesn't change anything it's a bad coil. You can also physically see and hear the spark arc to the wire if you hold it like an inch away, so it makes it easy to see if any cylinder(s) are getting a weaker spark.
