Need Advice Quick

I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a new 2011 Ranger XLT 4x4 with the 4.0 and 6-speed auto transmission.

I used to own a 99 Ranger 4x4 with the 3.0 and 5-speed manual. It was very reliable and easy to maintain. Engine oil changes, transmission, differential fluid changes, spark plugs etc.

So I assume all is pretty much the same on the 2011, 4.0 engine should be pretty easy I would think for all maintenence. Let me know please if not.

My concern is the 6-speed auto transmission. Is it reliable, can I expect it to last well over 100K, mostly highway miles. And is it reasonably easy to change the filter/fluid in this transmission ? Reason I ask is I know there is some difficulty (like no dipstick) on the late model 2005+ Mustangs with the automatic.

Also, realistically - what kind of highway gas mileage at about 75mph can I expect ?

Also, anything else I should know ?

thanks

I don't know much about the newer Rangers and what changed and I definitely didn't know a 6 speed auto was offered in 2011.

I can't think of many members off the top of my head that have 2011-12 Rangers but they might see this soon

I dont recall any 2011 with 6speeds. Take a picture of the window sticker.

May e 17-8 mpg. The tranny will last as long as you need it if maintained properly.

Yep, you may be right about the 6-speed auto. I think the sales manager on the phone might be wrong. I havent seen it and when I asked the sales manager to verify it was a manual he said it was a 6-speed auto. He says it has 15 miles on it, he might be wrong about that too.

Here is the spec from their website.

•Drivetrain 4-Wheel Drive
•Trans Order Code 44J
•Trans Type 5
•Trans Description Cont. Manual w/OD
•Trans Description Cont. Again
•First Gear Ratio (:1) 3.40
•Second Gear Ratio (:1) 2.05
•Third Gear Ratio (:1) 1.31
•Fourth Gear Ratio (:1) 1.00
•Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.79
•Sixth Gear Ratio (:1)
•Reverse Ratio (:1) 3.40
•Clutch Size (in) 10.0

The spec seems to be saying 5-speed manual, sales manager says 6-speed auto. I was hoping for a 5-speed manual. My 2006 Mustang with 4.0 and 5-speed manual gets about 28 on the highway. My old ranger 4x4 with 3.0 and 5-speed got about 24.

If I all I can expect is less than 20 mpg, then I may pass. I havent seen it and when I asked the sales manager to verify it was a manual he said it was a 6-speed auto.

Thanks for the replies.

It is the same trans that has been in the ranger forever. The 5 speed auto. 5r something. I have the 2010. Really it is the same drive train thats been in it since the 90's.
