Did '98 Ranger Sport exist?

Let me start by saying I own what's supposed to be a '98 Sport, 2wd, regular cab with a 3.0L, painted grill and rear bumper, etc. Color is uber consistent, the Sport decals look original, and I've seen nothing anywhere on or in the truck which indicates it was pieced together, or had body parts replaced.

That said, I've had reasons to search for '98 Sports, but I cannot find any "official" source which indicates the Sport existed in '98, but instead that it was dropped for a few years, then brought back in '99. Google searches will turn up maybe one or two non-verifiable examples of a '98, but the search results for a '99 is much more obvious.

Can somebody verify if the Sport existed in '98?

Thanks.

Yes they're real. The 98-00 Sport models were the predecessor to the EDGE trim that came in later years.

I'm just curious, what month was the truck built? It should say it on the door jam tag

I'll check tomorrow. I parked my truck in a tree a couple of days ago, so it's sitting a couple hundred yards away where I'm repairing it.

The 98-00 Sport trim level replaced the Splash trim level that was used on the 93-97 Rangers.

None of the Splash/Sport/Edge trucks were anything special. Just painted front and rear bumpers, decals, and vinyl floors.

I used to have a 2000 Sport that the previous owner installed a chrome front bumper on. If the truck didn't have the Sport decal on the tailgate or a black rear bumper, I would have never known it was a Sport.

I'm not a particular fan of the painted grill, and painted front and rear bumpers, but I got a great deal on the truck, so I've been happy nonetheless. That said, I'm having rust issues on my rear bumper, and was considering replacing it sometime later this year, but I just parked my front end into a tree, so I'll be replacing the driver side quarter panel, the radiator support, and everything forward. I'm considering giving it as updated a look as I can using the stock fenders.
