fuel pump relay?

I have a 1999 ranger xlt v flex 3.0. none of the power distribution diagrams I've found match my truck, owner's manual here or online. probably more than 1 problem. Put $10 gas in and the fuel gauge pegged way past full. To me not a big problem. fill up go 200 miles put more gas. Truck quit on me, started sputtering and quit, turns over if I spray starter fluid in the air intake... so fuel problem. pulled the bed. can't get one of the fuel lines off. drain the tank, drop the tank. The pump is quiet no clicking. bench test it pumps. fuel filter has the same dam,n clamp I can't get off the other end, by the way it has a removal tool clamped around the line. In one of your thread it says jumper 3,5 of the fuel pump relay #5 in the pdb and the pump will run continues ... my wipers turn on. one of my diagrams say wipers are on relay #1. I was a radar tech in the marines and computer tech for 16 years I've kind of got troubleshooting down but give me the right tools!

Welcome to the forum

1999 Rangers(1998 and up) will need to run 65psi fuel pressure so pump coming on in bench test may or may not mean it can maintain fuel pressure above 50psi

Yes you have the right relay if fuel pump comes on when you jumped 3 and 5, key on or off wouldn't matter.

1999 was also first year of PATS(passive anti-theft system) in all V6 Rangers
PATS disables fuel pump power and fuel injector pulses if wrong key is used in ignition
There is a Theft light in the dash, and it would flash rapidly if that happened.

You will need to get the fuel filter off and replace it, if you can't get hoses off then it may be original filter and thats your problem

The float and sender in the tank can be tested with OHM meter or just plug in the wires with assembly on outside of the tank and manually move the float, key on, it takes 5 to 10 seconds for fuel gauge to react to float movement, this is to prevent gauge from jumping around when you go around corners and gasoline sloshes back and forth
If you raise float a bit and gauge jumps to fuel then sender is most likely bad, so you will need to replace assembly
Ford gas gauge shows Empty with 16 ohms and Full with 158 ohms from sender
So shorted wire(0 ohms) would show below Empty, disconnected wire(infinite/high ohms) would show above Full

All good answers. found #5 relay, which does not match the manuals diagram, pump runs.
if I spray starter fluid in the air intake the truck starts and runs a few seconds.
The nib on the injector manifold if depressed shoots fuel, don't have a pressure gauge.

runs rough

after 3 days of work and searching, thanks to your posts I found out what its not. swapped the fuel pump relay with the horn relay. truck started but ran rough. Clearing the ECU did the job, removed the battery ground then jumpered between the +cable and the removed battery ground cable to drain the stored voltage in the ECU capacitors about ten minutes (saw it on a youtube video). Truck started up and runs. Now to get it all back together. Can't wait for the test drive.

As my name says it all Whatnext. Back together.. test drive made it out the driveway to the cul de sac. good power but the power steering is shuttering. when it broke down I had to armstrong the steering getting it back in the garage, didn't know you're not suppose to turn it without the pump running... lots of air in the system. While I was working on the steering.. sucking out the old fluid and putting new, running it then do it again. The thing died again! Won't start, back to tear down mode. I had drained the fuel tank to get the fuel pump out. I had just filled it, 3 5gal cans sitting in my shed. I used them to fill up for my test drive. Figured I wasn't getting pressure to start small and change the fuel filter first. During that frustrating process, same dam,n quick connect I can't get of the pump assembly won't come off the fuel filter. SO I give up and get an empty water bottle to check if the pump is doing it's job. quick crank 3 inches in the bottle and its not all gas 2 inches of water! Capital FFFF. Now that I've ranted after tear down and back together I've got to ride my bicycle to the gas station for clean gas.
