4.0 ohv swap ???

what im doing is, replacing my 1997 4.0 ohv motor with a 1996 4.0 ohv out of a explorer. both are automatic. any insight for problems i might have. will the explorer 4.0 bolt to my ranger transmission? 6 bolt flywheel vs 8 bolt ? PAT system problems? any info would be helpful thanks

Neither one should have PATS and both are the same engine so no issues with flywheel bolt up, etc. I'm not sure if there are sensor differences between the two, but you can handle those by just matching parts from your current truck to the new engine as needed.

Change rear main seal, always, when accessable

4.0l OHV info here: Rebuilding The Ford 4.0L Pushrod V6, Doug Anderson, Automotive Rebuilder, April 2001

Yes, '97 should have an 8 bolt crank so you will need 8 bolt flexplate for automatic

If you swap over your upper and lower intake all wire connectors will match, they may match '97 but as said look and see, Ford did change connector styles at random, no guide for that except looking

Fuel pressure is the same(35psi), Cam sensor as well(3 wire)

1997 was also the first year Explorers got the 4.0l SOHC engine option, I am sure it is an OHV but if you haven't seen it.............

Apologies, I misunderstood the issue with the flywheel. Apparently it was a late '97 MY change, so you may get lucky on the Explorer still having a 6 bolt crank.

No, use Ranger ECM(PCM)

It is setup for that vehicle and wiring harness

4.0l OHV engine is the engine it is programmed to operate so no computer change is needed unless you change engine model/size, or transmission model
