Hello! I've searched the forum and found no thread for this so, I'm hoping someone can help. I'm trying to install a new starter on a 1991 4WD 4.0 with an automatic transmission. The transmission code is "T" and everything seems to be correct. After the starter went out, I tried to install a new one (tried 3 different ones including a Ford starter) and I cannot get it to seat all the way down. There is a little bit of a lip that catches on the bell housing and stops it. The plate between the bell housing and the block seems to be shifted over a little, but not sure if that would cause the problem. Any ideas?

Never had or even read about 4.0l starter fitment issues, getting them out and back in to position in a 4x4 is a pain, have to twist and turn, lol

There is often a rear bolt holding the back of the motor to the block, make sure it has been removed, so motor can slide in straight

No the plate shouldn't be the issue

I am sure the old starter motor was traded back in as core already?
but be nice to compare it to new one

Did the old starter come out of the bell housing OK, no sticking?

 

Thanks for the reply. You're correct, the original was turned in for core. All of the bolts have been removed and yes it is a pain to get it into position.
