Hey guys, I have a 2003 Ford Ranger XLT FX4 Level II, manual transmission, manual transfer case. I am having an issue where the 4wd light on the dash will come on when I put it into 4 high, but stays there and wont go to the 4 low light when I shift to 4 low. 4 wheel drive works fantastic and have never had an issue using it. If I don't use the 4wd at all for a long while, sometimes the 4wd light will turn off on its own.
On manual 4x4's like yours, there's a switch screwed into the front of the transfer case. It may sometimes stick and need replacement. Look for wire color codes light blue/black and gray.

Any ideas? Thanks!
On the transfer case there is the electric motor that engages the 4 wheel drive. It’s about the size of a soda can. Check the wire connections. If that doesn’t work try tapping it with a wrench or hammer, don’t hit it too hard. If tapping works you might need to replace the electric motor.
I had the same problem a couple months ago and had to replace the electric motor.

The OP has a manually shifted transfer case, so no motor. In his truck, the shift lights in the instrument cluster work from a small 2-wire switch on the front of the transfer case.
