How Many Catalytic Converters on a 98 XLT 4.0?
I have a 98 Ranger XLT 4.0L. Yesterday it did not pass the smog inspection because it failed the “visual test,” according to the smog tech. It did, however, pass the emissions test. The smog tech directed me to a sticker on the radiator support labeled Ford Motor Company Important Vehicle Information. Among other things, the sticker shows this: 2TWC,TWC(2)/HO2S(2),HO2S(2)/EGR/SFI
He says this tells him there should be 4 cats. The problem is my truck only has 2 cats (behind the collector). I have not changed the exhaust and the previous owner says he never changed anything. Does anyone know how many cats there should be? And where would they go? Could my engine bay have the wrong sticker (like maybe from an Explorer)? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions!!

Thank you V8 Level II !! In my truck neither leg of the Y-pipe has a anything that resembles a cat. Each leg does appear to have some sort of sensor (O2?) up high by the manifold. I assume these are actually sensors and not the catalytic converters. Now I have to get 2 more cats. Not what I wanted to hear, but I really appreciate your help!!!
