Acting Weird

OK I have a 94 xcab 2wd 4.0

It's acting weird (great way to describe it right?)

it's losing power. What it does is drops power if I keep my foot on the gas it "might" stay running but only at like 500 or lower rpm's. if I put my foot on the clutch and hit the gas it will get to 4000 rmp's but once I put any tork on the motor it dies. It wont restart right away but if I let it sit for an hour or so she fires right up like nothing is wrong. Drive it 10 or 15 miles acts up again.

I'm thinking start with the fuel filter then move the pump. I'm on the right lines here or do I need to look at something else?

James

On the front top side of the engine, behind the alternator is the Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR)

It will have a Fuel line connected to it, the Fuel Return line, and it will also have a smaller Vacuum line.
Remove vacuum line and check it for gasoline, shouldn't be any in there, replace FPR if there is gasoline coming out of vacuum port.
It Floods out the engine.

Loosen gas cap and go for a drive, long shot but you could be getting an air lock in the tank.

Yes, change fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in the last 5 years.

You can rent a fuel pressure gauge and test pressure at the engine, 30psi is expected when running
REV engine to about 2,500rpm and leave it there while watching pressure, if it is slowly dropping then yes change pump
