4 Litre performance mods?

Hi - after help any help / advice

I'm in the UK but got a 1994 Ranger, 4 litre, manual, 4x4.

A good old truck and will probably keep it. In an ideal world I woud buy a much newer version of the same - but not so easy over here.

But would love it to have a bit more performance - not expecting miracles - but any sensible mods that make a difference?

Thanks side steps now removed - this was a few years ago when I bought it

Welcome to the forum

Nice looking 1994, my 1994 looks a little more "used"
I have the same truck in Red, 4.0l, manual, 4x4

Not much out there for the 4.0l OHV engine, 160hp
Ford switched to 4.0l SOHC engine in 2001 to get 205hp in a Ranger.

It already has Cold Air Intake, a good fuel injection system, and full air flow.

Exhaust is tuned, but for mid-range "boost", you can get headers that will change it to low-range "boost", or high-range if racing.

Roller rockers are available, you can port the heads, and shave them for higher compression, it's 9.0:1 now
4.0l SOHC engines ran 9.7:1 ratio which is where the extra HP came from

Loosing mechanical cooling fan and putting in an electric fan will increase power and MPG, one of the only changes that can do both.
But it ain't much, maybe 3-5hp

They do make a supercharger for these, but not a cheap option and of course you can blow out the bottom end, if boost gets too high.

Many thanks and much appreciated - guess I'll just keep it as it is. Actually I just bought an F150 / 5.4 (only 2wd) - but to be honest I prefer the Ranger so I think the F150 will go! Ranger is far more practical.

But will have to keep my eyes open for a newer version - maybe import one from the States .....SOHC engine, 4wd, manual and semi extended cab :)

The sohc is a great engine, it has it's own quirks but I love it.

Thanks - think I need to find a later Ranger with the SOHC - but chances of finding one over here are not great!
