Oil Filter Housing

Just bought a 98 Ford Ranger with a 3.0L V6. I went to do an oil change and noticed I have been leaking from around the oil filter. The actually filters are fine but each time I put one on its tough to turn and when it feels like the filter is fully seated. It's not. I'm thinking It's the oil filter housing unit. Is this a common problem with Rangers?

The filter attaches directly to the engine. Check the stud for damage. What oil filters are you using?

I was originally using a Champion oil filter. I switched to a Puralator PL20195 today
