Hello,

I have just bought a 2006 4.0 4x4 with a snapped timing chain. I have sourced an engine from a 2007 4.0 4x4.

Before i start ripping everything apart has anyone got any tips to replacing the engines on these? I'm planning to leave the transmission(manual) in place but put a new clutch in at the same time.
Any special tools i'll need to do this?
I have a mechanic friend helping me out on this so fingers crossed it all goes smoothly!

4.0l SOHC is an interference engine, but just barely, so engine may be fine by just replacing timing chains.
After pulling the engine use a snake video camera down spark plug holes and look for marks on the top of the pistons if seen then valves were bent on that bank, if no marks then just change the cassettes and tensioners.

If no marks you can still swap engines but current 4.0l SOHC would have resale value to person or shop that wants to rebuild one


Shouldn't be an issue swapping motors, check engine wiring placement, '06 and '07 should be the same but Ford can throw in a surprise or two.
Replace rear main seal, always, on any engine when you have access
For the 4.0l sohc replace knock sensor and check thermostat housing carefully, they tended to crack and leak

 

Awesome, thanks Ron, Should be starting the replacement in the next couple days. I have a replacement engine already so I'll just pull the old one apart when i Have it out and see what the damage is and possibly rebuild.
Judging by that page it looks as though i'd need a load of special tools for the timing chains so maybe easier to sent it to a shop?

There is a tool kit for setting timing chains up.

DIYers buy the kit and use it once then resell it, so look on ebay for used kit then resell it after you are done.
Sometimes local shops will Rent a kit, if they have one, better to make a few dollars than have it sitting waiting for the next 4.0l SOHC to come in, lol.

 

Engine is in and running! Got it running last thursday with a very high idle, assumed it was intake manifold not sealing properly. But as I started pulling it apart realised I'd missed a vacuum line!
