98 3.0 jerks under no-load cruising
98 3.0 jerks under no-load cruising
98 Ranger automatic has an inconsistent jerk when cruising about 40 mph.
Doesn't seem to miss when under a load. There's no engine light or stored
codes. Need help getting it to smooth out. Very annoying. Could it be Mas
Air Flow sensor or something similar?

Welcome to the forum
Even though the CEL(check engine light) is not on stop by an auto parts store and see if there are any codes in memory, WRITE DOWN any codes
1998 3.0l Ranger would have the 4R44E automatic
Try driving at 40mph in 2nd or 3rd(OD OFF) to see if its RPM related or possibly transmission related.
Cleaning the MAF sensor should be done yearly because it is so easy to do, so won't hurt.
CAM sensor/synchronizer on the 3.0l can cause similar problems, it should be changed every 100k miles as general maintenance, so keep that in mind, if you don't know when it was last changed
You change the whole unit, synchronizer and sensor
