Engine dies while driving but restarts

Hi all,
I just purchased a 97 ford ranger 4.0 4x4. IvI'had a host of problems since I got the truck even though I got it from what I thought was a reputable dealership. The check engine light has been on since about 2 weeks after I bought the truck and so far I have had the 4wd motor replaced, new head gaskets installed, all new vacuum hoses put in, replaced the pcv valve and the light is still on. I'm waiting on the ford dealership to find a new mass airflow sensor to put in because they believe that may be the problem. My dad just cleaned the mass airflow sensor for me in hopes that I wouldn't have to replace it but the light is still on. Today while driving to work I stopped at a red light and tried to accelerate wwheit turned green, but the car wouldn't drive, just kinda drifted backwards. The steering wheel was locked up as well but the radio kept playing, all the lights worked and the AC kept on. I shut the car off and restarted it no problem. I got about 15 minutes up the road and had to stop at a stop sign and the same thing happened again. Anybody have any ideas? Could it be related to the mass air flow sensor? Perhaps my dad didn't reinstall it properly? Or does it seem like an electrical issue? Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have an hour drive to get back home from work and I'm pretty reluctant to drive my car back home. Thanks, Kimmi

Welcome to the forum

1997 4.0l Ranger is pretty reliable, so odd to have problems, but at 21 years old...................

What are the EXACT Code(s) that came up?
P0XXX
P1XXX

Not, "it was a MAF code", there are several "MAF codes", need exact number(s)

When engine stalls you lose power steering and power brakes, so steering didn't "lock" you just lost power assist

Stop replacing things
Get the CODE(S) first

Fuel injected engines can't use an Idle Screw, they need to use an Air Valve, Ford calls theirs an IAC Valve, idle air control valve
The computer controls this air valve to set idle
When you start engine cold computer will open IAC Valve more to set higher idle, 1,100rpms or so
As engine warms up computer starts to close IAC Valve more to set lower idle, about 700rpms after full warm up

Does this happen, high idle cold, lower idle warm?
