Air Silencer Removal Debate
Air Silencer Removal Debate
I've heard a lot of back and forth about removing the air silencer from the air intake box on the rangers. After hours of researching and hundreds of opinions, I'm still left confused. I've heard that the silencer has benefits: increasing throttle response, making things louder, more MPG or even a boost in HP. But I've also heard that it does nothing, or even hinders performance, and everything in between.
Does anyone have any input on this that isn't so controversial? Preferably by people who have tried the mod. I'm new to modding and since this is such a popular thing to start with, I'd like to get to the bottom of it.

In general no car maker "detunes" or puts on anything to take away performance or power, that would be opposite of their business model, i.e. "Please buy our car because it has less power and performance than other cars", ads usually say the opposite, lol.
"Bolt-on" changes to air intake or exhaust can't change much unless part its replacing was broken
There are a few dyno tests by INDEPENDENT testers that show this to be the case.
If you are buying something for looks then go for it, or if you "think" car is faster with it then good buy, whether it is or not is not the point
With the dyno results I have seen there is no debate only discussions

Just to expand on Ron's resounds (I agree with him completely), the silencer is there for the reason you'd expect - it reduces the noise of air coming through the intake tube. No real effect in either direction on power. Feel free to remove it and drive around without it, you aren't going to hurt anything. If you like the sound that way, leave it off.
