I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT, 4x2, regular cab, and the glove box doesn't have a lock. Is there any way to install a lock, or are there any other locking glove boxes (or just latches) from other vehicles that can be swapped into my vehicle? Would I be able to swap in a glove box from a 95-97 Ranger?
I think Explorers had locking glove box but only 1990-1995, not sure on fitment for 1998 Ranger, and finding a key for these would be next to impossible
Don't recall ever seeing one on any Ranger
There are a few 3rd party glove box locks and wrecking yards may have some stock locks that will work, must have the KEY
You don't have to replace current latch, just a round hole off to either side with a latch that turns only with a key is all you need.
Or a gate latch with a padlock, LOL
Do you know if latches from other Ford vehicles might fit? I found some locking latches on Ebay from other Ford vehicles that are similar in size, but I don't know if they can be directly swapped.
2001 Mustang: Locking Latch
2002 Escape: Locking Latch, Locking Latch
I was able to use a locking latch from an 01-07 Ford Escape in my 98 Ranger (part #YF3A-5406004-AAW). The overall dimensions are the same as the stock Ranger latch, but it was not a direct drop in. The single screw doesn't line up with the hole in the glove box (other 2 screws do line up) and I needed to grind away a little bit of material with a Dremel to get it to fit, but after that it was an easy fit. Very easy mod overall.
