Hi everyone - I'm new here, trying to help my daughter fix her 1998 Ranger that won't start with the key. After replacing multiple parts (key cylinder, Ignition switch and neutral bypass) there was still no crank to starter. The key cylinder does feels strange, no clear 'click' as you move from Off to Acc to start but my daughter said its always done that.
After looking at the path of the starter lead that comes off the ignition switch I found that if I run a lead from the ignition switch starter lead direct to the starter and then slide the pin on top of the ignition module to start the car turns right over. So I thought I had a temp fix and put the ignition switch back into the column where the pin links to a part that is connected to key cylinder (see pic)
Once put back together the key when turn to start position will not engage the ignition switch pin to engage the starter. I notice the piece in the steering column when the pin inserts is very loose, like its connection is broken to the key cylinder.
Anyone run into this and what was the solution? Appreciate any help!!!
Its a pain to get to and replace, remember to unhook battery for AT LEAST 15 minutes BEFORE starting to working on steering wheel, airbag deployment can RUIN your whole day
