Did you mess with the camshaft synchronizer underneath the camshaft position sensor? Or did you just unplug the sensor?

Unplug the cam sensor again, you don't need it just yet

Check the firing order on the Coil Pack and follow EACH spark plug wire to its cylinder
This is coil pack firing order

3 4
2 6
1 5
front

The 5 6 4 side always gets mixed up, so check it, and then have a friend check it, then check it again

Then try to start it

Without cam sensor computer just runs Batch fire injection, so not a big deal at all on the 4.0l OHV

I dont recall, im 99% sure we just unplugged connectors

And im pretty sure the firing order is correct but ill double check and i can just unplug it see if it starts up?

Also it still ocasionally missfires too when it was running before i plugged in that connector

You should be fine if you just unplugged things. The camshaft synchronizer is like a distributor, but without the electrical parts on top. It's what the camshaft position sensor bolts on to.

Same thing happened even flipped the spark plugs and tried to see if it made difference and it made no difference,
Also unplugged the cam position sensor no difference, it tries to turn over once then just makes a blower type noise, same ordeal. Maybe the starter or something?

Not sure, not alot to go on

Try 50/50 test, a few times
Spray gasoline or Ether into the intake
Try to start

If it starts, runs, and then dies you have spark but no fuel from the injectors
If it doesn't start, then no spark
50/50

So you have no spark

In a 1999 Ranger 4.0l OHV that would be either the Crank sensor(NOT CAM sensor) or the computer

Crank sensor is next to the crank pulley(about 10:00), it "reads" a tone wheel, looks like a 'gear', behind the pulley, this is the MAIN sensor, it tells computer engine is turning so start spark and fuel injectors, without this the computer doesn't even know you want to start the engine.

Make sure its plugged in and follow its wires, 2 + a shield, up to main harness, runs up front of engine to above thermostat housing, make sure they are not damaged

I am sure you checked that the 4 wire connector on the coil pack is plugged in

And yes, starter motor's drive may be giving up the ghost if it only engages a few times then motor just spins, not the engine, "blower noise"

My bet is on the starter motor giving out cause everything is hooked up correctly

Well if the engine is turning then it will start using 50/50 test IF you have spark

You have a 1999 Ranger V6 so you will have PATS, passive anti-theft system, I assume the Theft light come on and then goes OFF after you turn key on, if it flashes rapidly then engine will not start
