Spark plug socket (smaller one), extension, and tentacles instead of hands...

Ha ha - yeah that's about it!

Sometimes it's easier to get to some of them through the wheel wells if you can't reach down easily. That's what I do with the ones on the passenger side in particular on my 3.0.

This makes me glad I have the OHV 4.0.. I can reach all the plugs from the top, with only a little contortion for the rear right.. I tried to do the plugs in my dads SOHC in his Exploder.. couldnt even see three of them.. they stayed.. lol... good luck!

I don't know about the Explorer but like John said; the Ranger passenger side is much easier if you remove the left front wheel and splash guard to access the spark plugs through the wheel well. That means you need one more piece of equipment, a jack stand. I thought doing it that way was easier than changing the spark plug in my 89 2.9L OHV engine from the top.

A spark plug socket, with the rubber piece that actually holds onto the spark plug, makes the job alot easier.

It would have been the same deal.. just didnt think of it then.. that was a year or more ago.. the Exploder is gone.. now its an Escape.. I wouldn't even think of trying it on those transverse mounted V6's.. they just look like a major PITA...

Yea Wowak is right, those spark plug sockets are a must! I had to change one once with a standard deap socket.. yea.. wasn't fun.. especialy since it was hot..

The passenger side rear plug it's a pain the ***. I suggest renting a midget, shoving him in there, and ordering him to change it for you.

Actually the pass side is easy if you leave the extension off. You get plenty of room without it. Also this will deffinitly get rid of any ping you may have. I did it about 15k ago and it has never returned. It.s like a different truck.

Use a spark plug socket. Not just a 5/8" deep socket. I cracked one of my plugs and it started to misfire when I used a regular socket. Good luck. On the 3.0L it's super easy.
