FIX FOR 3.0 THAT IDLES ROUGH AFTER WARM UP.
My 05 STX Ranger started running rough at idle after warm up with a misfire on cylinder #3 and p016 random misfires. I started replacing plugs, injectors, coil pack, every sensor on it and even a new ECM. Everyone kept telling me it was the valves. I finally bought rebuilt heads and everything to overhaul the engine. I bought the rebuild kit from Rockauto, it was a 3.0 rebuild kit that included new pistons, oil pump , gaskets and everything to rebuild it right..I bought a new camshaft syncrhonizer too.
When the engine was tore down the valves looked great, I had already bought rebuilt heads and the engine ran great after installation so I assumed that whatever was causing the misfire was fixed. 53k miles later It starts the same crap all over but this time on cylinder #6.
By this time I have a thousand dollars worth of sensors from the first misfire in my shop that I had replaced last time so I start with plugs, coil pack and sensors. When I got to the camshaft sensor it was full of oil that had been coming up through the camshaft synchronizer. I bought a new camshaft synchronizer and pulled the one from Rockauto with 53k miles on it. I was really surprised, it was totally wore out.
That made wonder about the one that was pulled out when the engine was rebuilt so I dug it out of the box and sure enough the bushings were wore out.
After installing the new camshaft synchronizer it is running great again, no misfires with a smooth idle.
I learned a very expensive lesson. So..... if you have a rough idle after warm up and you have to power brake at red lights so your CEL will not come on, check your camshaft synchronizer first, it will save you a LOT of money and headaches.
