Starter pinion engagement
Starter pinion engagement
Put a new Starter In my 89 ranger v-6. It clearly was grinding a bit so I put a flat washer as a shim on each of the two mounting bolts. This backed the starter away and problem solved. But, now when the engine is cold (morning). The starter shaft spins but does not engage first try. Then second or third try it engages nicely and starts right up. I am thinking initially because it is cold, it has resistance to slide out? Can one lubricate that shaft? Oil? Wd-40? Or is that a Nono. My other thought is ther3 is a large current surge to starter and maybe a poor connection? After running and short stops it engages first try no problem. Ideas?
