What is the best tuner for a 2000 4.0 OHV 4.0 Ranger
What is the best tuner for a 2000 4.0 OHV 4.0 Ranger
Hey guys are there any plug in tuners out there that are for the older 4.0 ohv Rangers?I have a 2000 and have been thinking of buying some sort of tuner for it if I can find one that other people say make a realistic difference in performance and fuel economy.
No, not really, and not worth while
Yes, some who spends $200-$800+ on tuning would be an IDIOT if they said it didn't make a difference, lol, so grain of salt on claims
If factory computer is not working well then changing settings can matters
If you want to run premium(93 octane) you can tune it for better power by making spark time more aggressive
No car maker "detunes" an engine, they SELL power and performance, so ask yourself, why would they do that?

Car makers also have government regulations they must meet. I can assure you there are tunes that make a significant difference, at least with the 4.0 SOHC engine.
I originally bought a Super Chips programmer, but the tune was not satisfactory in my opinion. I then found a tuner that could reinstall tunes to reflash the computer. He had good reviews so I sent it to him and was very happy with the results. I did before and after acceleration tests and got some significant improvements. I did the tests from a rolling start and in 3rd gear (manual transmission) to get no variables from spinning tires and shifting. I was a test engineer at Ford Aerospace for six an a half years, so I know how to test and not just some idiot making claims.
The 87 octane performance tune gave a 0.7 sec improvement in the 40-70 mph acceleration test and 0.45 sec improvement in the 50-80 mph acceleration test.
The 91 octane torque tune gave also 0.7 sec improvement in the 40-70 mph acceleration test but 1.2 sec improvement in the 50-80 mph acceleration test.
I also gained 0.5 to 1 mpg average (city) improvement with the 87 octane performance tune. Of course that was with not using the extra power and driving the same as I did with the stock tune. The performance tune also made it more drivable. It has better engine compression deceleration and shifting is quicker due to the faster rpm drop. It also eliminated the hesitation after a quick shift and would go right to full power at full throttle. The engine is more responsive in general.
The 4.0 OHV engine would probably not as much improvement but you never know. The guy that retuned my programmer no longer does it, but I am sure there is someone still doing it. You just have to research and find the right tuner.
