1997 Ranger SE died on hiway and won't start
I was driving and my 97 Ranger and it died going down the road and would not star again. The lid to the power steering was half blown off and fluid was everywhere. Any idea what this could be and what the fix might be. Thanks.
Welcome to the forum
1997 2.3l Ranger
Reads like timing belt broke, they need to be changed every 80k miles
Not the fan belt, the timing belt
It won't cause any engine damage if it breaks while driving, engine will just die and won't restart
There is a thin metal cover over the timing belt, at the top front of engine is the Cam gear, see if you see the timing belt on that gear, if so have someone crank the engine and see if the belt is turning the Cam
2nd thing might be Fuel Pump quit, very very odd for that to happen while driving, electric pumps usually quit at startup, they just won't start one day, so a no start, but once running they tend to stay running
Power steering fluid coming out could be because timing belt broke and there was a sudden stop of the crank driven fan belt, its different if engine shuts off normally and belt just slows down

Test compression in a few cylinders
Timing belt may be off by 1 or 2 teeth which lowers compression, and that lowers power
Expected is 150psi+, 165psi would not be unexpected
If 2 cylinders tested are under 130psi then timing belt is off
In 1997 there are 3 marks on the 3 gears that need to match up
Seen here: https://www.justanswer.com/uploads/f..._180920_A1.jpg
The larger Cam Gear and Aux Gear are the same gears(interchangeable) so can have both marks, a Triangle and a Diamond, and half a Diamond looks like a triangle, lol
Its important that both of these are correctly timed
And of course crank gear mark
After install of new timing belt and tensioner set, rotate crank a few times clockwise, on every 2nd full rotation the 3 timing marks should line up again, so after 2 rotations, 4 and 6 rotations the 3 marks are aligned each time, it can be 1/2 tooth off, but not a full tooth
