Your opinion/guess as to what direction to take.
1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6. Situation-- Loud clanking noise and engine quit while driving at 50 mph -- towed home. 125,000 miles. Looked at timing chain = OK. Looked at water pump = OK. Broken spark plug in Number 2. I am guessing that I have a broken rod and/or piston in number Two. I came up with two avenues I can take. Pull pan/head and replace piston/rod/bearings/etc and oil pump. Inspect cylinder wall. Hope (cross fingers) that new piston/etc will (maybe) seal and I can run engine for a few thousand more miles. OR get a rebuilt for 2500 to 3000 and fix it (maybe) right. What would you do? Do I have a prayer of my cylinder wall sealing with a new piston/etc so I can "get by" for a while? Are there other options? Thanks for the reply.
