My 2003 Ranger edge with the 4.0 sohc engine is having some problems on acceleration. After I drive for a while, I press on the gas pedal and the engine cuts out like it stopped getting fuel. It starts giving it fuel again if I ease up on the pedal but eventually I cant maintain speed on the road and have to stop. If I stop the truck and turn it off and back on the problem immediately goes away and and then takes a little while to come back. I put my scanner on the truck and it has pending po171 and po174 codes which is for lean fuel mixture in both banks of the engine. The fuel pump and fuel filter were recently replaced and I tried cleaning the maf sensor but that didn't change anything. What could be causing this?

 

How many miles are on the truck? Have you ever changed the O2 sensors?

 

It has 51k miles. I don't think it has had them replaced. It sat in a barn not being driven for about 12 years before I bought it last july

 

I would try cleaning the map sensor. That’s real easy. Check YouTube and you can get the cleaner at any auto parts place

 

Yeah I cleaned the MAF sensor already and it didn't fix it. I think I might get a new one and see if that works.

MAP and MAF are two different things.
