Timing belt change
Timing belt change
1995, 2.3l XLT.
Been probably about 5 years ago, a new timing belt kit was put in. Currently the belt is getting some cracks on the back side of it. Since that's all that is wrong, is it a good idea to replace it all, or just the belt?
Typically, I have it done by a mechanic, but I was wondering if just changing a belt, if loosening the belt to remove it, why a new belt can't just be put on, and why timing marks need to be looked at, or does something move in the process?

Dealing with timing issues myself currently on a 95 as well.
you have to take the crank pulley off, loosen the tensioner and work the belt out. Make sure you know where your marks are, good idea to line everything up at TDC before removing the belt. Just double check your marks on the other two pulleys are in the same place noted by the triangles on the inner cover. (I put mine in gear to prevent the crank from moving until the belt is on and tensioner is on it. 12:00 position.)
yes the pulleys will move and shift while it’s apart with no belt on it. And also when you apply tension and try to work the belt on.
but if it’s been 5 years, you might as well do the routine maintenance while the front of the engine is apart like that. Water pump, thermostat housing and thermostat, maybe fan clutch if you want. It’s only a couple hour job to do all of it, so let it ride until something fails later if you want. Not a huge deal.
