Okay as a posted a few weeks ago. I'm going to buying a new truck next year sometime. Now i'm planning on buying an old B2 to build into a trail rig and it will not be street legal and will be towed everywhere. here's my question. What would be a better tow rig.

2006/7 Ford ranger 4.0

2006/7 regcab f150 5.4

Now I know the f150 has more then enough power to do it. However would the ranger be able to handle it? I'd really love to stick with a ranger, but at the same time a f150 would be nice. So what do you think the pros and cons would be of both vehicles.

the F150 would win in any scenario, its more powerful, its heavier, it has better brakes, etc. It would be hard to argue a Ranger over an F150 for towing.

 

i agree the ranger can pull a trailor with a b2 on it but it does not like to stopwith it

 

Either way you deffiently want an automatic tranny. Personally i would go for the F150.

 

f150 will definatly pull better. much better.

Thats really the best choice. you might need an F150 now but you never know down the road you might need some more towing ability.

 

I towed my B2 from up near Centralia, to my house in Harrisburg. I also towed it back and forth to my job out near Reading...I had no problems.
I agree with Earl, if the trailer you use has brakes, you will be fine in all cases. :)

An F series, would perform better as a tow rig in all occasions, but you won't be towing all the time. Can you justify a bigger truck, just for that? Ultimately, buy what you are comfortable towing with...

 

what about an f-350

f-150 sounds like the better choice

 

I think the smart choice would be any f-150 with the 4.9 inline 6. That's a bulletproof engine that will never die and is amazing. Sure it'll prolly be an older truck. Do you need a brand new truck as a tow truck though?

and the 4.6 is a huge piece of **** [ridiculously underpowered]and i mean thats coming from someone
who drives a 3.0....

 

96 was the last year of the 4.9. In 97 they came out with the 4.2. My new truck will be the DD and a regcab wouldn't be bad. It'll be about the same size as my truck just a bit wider.

 

Get an F-750. It'd knock your socks off.

 

Get a fullsize plow truck then you can make money too plowing.

i see there's nothing wrong with using the ranger
i used my 87 2.3 to pull my charger (3.850 lbs.) a couple of times
i just reccomend using a bigger moter than what i used

actually, go ahead and use the F-150.

 

the F150 4.6 is a slug from the factory, but a tune alone gives it 46 more tq at peak. that doesnt even count across the band. I towed a ford aspire on a car dolly with my 2003 ranger 4.0 4x4 4.10s, and it SUCKED, of course the trailer had no brakes. but it still sucked. Then recently i rented a full floor car hauler and moved the 87 ranger, and a 72 gran torino, and a 65 galaxie, all with no problems at all.

an F150 is just plain more powerful, has better brakes, etc. plus F150s are cool
