just had my tranny flushed....works GREAT now....so much smoother....

i took it home and dropped the pan, and changed the filter, everything is back together....

BUT I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO FILL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID UP!!!!!

I CHECKED HAYNES, FORD MANUAL, AND ALLDATA and nothing tells me

do i use the dipstick spot? how do i do this?????

 

use the dipstick hole dipstick!

If your more daring put a shift kit in it. Its just 14 or so more bolts than dropping the pan.

 

how many miles do you have?

 

They make shift kits for this truck?

Also, yea tranny services do wonders for some cars/trucks. Make sure when you tighten you use a 1/4 inch ratchet/socket or a speet ratchet as not to ruin the gasket by over torquing..

 

Trans - go sk-4455 or something like that. Is what I installed about 50k ago.

 

62,4XX right now....first tranny flush

 

mine just got one yesterday too. It had 77K on it. I don't know it it had one before or not. I got it with 47K and the fluid looked brand new. Now it was beat so I had it flushed. Made a world of difference.

 

my only concern is i checked out my receipt from NTB (National Tire and Battery), and it says "up to 18qt of ATF" then a little later says Dextron/Mercon nothing about III or V type of fluid. when i dropped my pan, i lost about 4qt or so, so i filled with mobile 1 ATF Mercon V which is what is suppose to go in there.

should i be worried? any thoughts?

i think im going to call, but i dont know how to find out what they ACTUALLY put in my truck.

 

If they put plain Mercon in your tranny, you should be worried. Your transmission calls for Mercon V. If they can't prove that they used Mercon V, then I'd have them redo it, or refund my money so I could go elsewhere. For tranny service I ONLY go to the dealer.

 

You can flush it yourself with a bucket and a piece of pvc hose and a hose clamp
its very easy. Do a search on here. Just get 15qts of mercon V fluid and have at it..

well, i called, and spoke with the manager....

he told me there is a generic sku for the tranny flush.....i told him that my truck takes mercon v, and he asked me if its a newer ford. i told him yes, and he said that was what was used, no question. i believe him....but if there is trouble ever, im going after ntb.

 

Screw that!!! I would have specifically asked to see proof of what they put in. If they added Mercon III you could have overheating issues with the tranny. Nothing I'd trust some shady NTB manager with. It could com back to bite you in the a$$ if you don't doublecheck. They very may have well used Mercon V but alot of the ppl working in those places (no disrespect to those of you that do) don't know the difference between their a$$ and a hole in the ground.

 

was it easy to install? i've never really done tranny work before... is it a driveway install? ;o)

 

Not the way to deal with tranny fluid. It should Be the same color going in as it is coming out. If it changes smell or color you have already doen damage to your tranny. It is a Common mistake people make. Also if you buy a new used car, take it in and have it inspected buy a mechanic and all the fluids replaced, reguardless of any sticker on the car or whether the guy told you it was just done.

Also I would do complete flush every 40K at the max reguardless of the condition. I can't tell you the number of Rangers and explorers that would barely register any tranny pressure on the guage on the side of the tranny flush machine, that had around 50-60 K on the odometer. These tranny's don't hold up well to lack of maintenance.

mine has been changed every 25k and i have 71k miles on it. the trannys just plain suck even if you do maintenace to them. i have also been told that you can change the fluid too much, with all the detergants that tranny fluid has it can actually be worse to do it too much.

 

That may be, I have never heard that, but I bet it is less detrimental to Change it more often than less i'd think. I think 30K is a nice # to shoot for. I do my cadillac every year and it gets less than 3K a year on the odometer and it's a TH400 almost a bullet proof tranny. I have just seen too many people who think the color of their tranny fluid is the barometer for when it needs changing and that is wrong.

idk if it is true either, a friend that owns a shop told me that was how he was taught.

 

I did it in the driveway. Its not hard but you really need to be careful as there are alot of small parts that can fall out. Other than that its easy. I have info for the VB R and R pm me if interested.
